Based on versions worn in the 'Picnic' scenes from the 2004 movie "EMMA". Here be proof that you dont have to spend a fortune to put together a gorgeous costume.

7 Woman's sheer linen shirt (Op Shop for $6 but was 1/2 Price Day!)
8 The shape of the collar was what caught my eye .. frills were unpicked by hand.
9 Vest converted from another ladies shirt, again 1/2 price. The straw 'boater' hat was an $8 Op Shop gem as well! (genuine/antique Boaters were selling on eBay for US$40+)
10 The pants/womens capris, again 1/2 price - all 3 pieces came to less than $15!
11 Shortened the shirt to waister length. Sleeves removed & armholes finished, original plastic buttons replaced with larger buttons we covered using the fabric from one of the sleeves, buttonholes widened to accomodate the larger buttons.
12 The original collar points glued back inside to create a more authentic 'line'
13 Using the original shirt back, I cut a new back (1.5mtr piece of fabric for $1.50 from Aust Red Cross Op Shop) & shaped the back waistline with a couple of tucks.
14 Butterick 3721 - almost ideal, but the cut of the collar didnt suit what I had in mind.
15 Butterick 3648/View B - chose this as the base because the collar lapel started lower & the back of the jacket bodice had no centre seam.
16 Almost done - Jacket made from Panama Stretch suiting, 3.5mt x 148cm wide/$6.99pm. Used 8 sml wooden buttons for front & cuffs. The cravat was a 45 x 12inch length of sheer white voile.
