BAKELITE: Thermoset: A type of plastic (synthetic resin) that is permanently hardened by cooling. Thermosets are heavily cross-linked. Synthetic materials that strengthen during being heated, but cannot be successfully remolded or reheated after their initial heat-forming. Developed in 1907 by Leo Baekeland and popular for jewelry in the 1930's/40's.
*Bakelite is either transparent,translucent or opaque.Colors change with age..No bright white or colorless vintage bakelite.
*No mold marks or seams.
*Changes color with prolonged exposure to sunlight.

OTHER PLASTICS: Thermoplastic: A type of plastic that can be softened by heat, hardened by cooling, and then softened by heat over and over again. Thermoplastics are not cross-linked.

CELLULOID: Thermoplastic: Generally regarded to be the first thermoplastic, it was registered as Celluloid in 1870. Celluloid is easily molded and shaped, and it was first widely used as an ivory replacement. Celluloid is highly flammable and also easily decomposes, and is no longer widely used.
*Comes in many colors
*Brittle,solid or hollow
*Flammable

LUCITE (trade name): Thermoplastic: Transparent acrylic or tinted color.
*Introduced in 1937
*Solid,not hollow
*Can have glitter or seashells embedded within

Tests for Bakelite:
*Two pieces tapped together produce a clunk sound.
*Under hot water produces a distinctive odor.Once you have smelled it you will know,like formaldehyde
*Formula 409 on a Qtip and rubbed on piece will produce a nicotine yellow color.Rinse immediately.
*Bakelite testing squares
*Never use a hot needle
*The Simichrome Test

Tests for Celluloid:
*Under hot water smells like camphor,dip quickly and dry immediately
*Do not use hot needle as Celluloid is highly flammable
*Do not immerse in hot water if rhinestones are present

Tests for Lucite:
*Some say under hot water it produces a fruity smell but I have yet to find that happen
