1 Waiting for the train at Leonardo da Vinci airport, after landing around 7:30 am. Got a surprising amount of sleep on the plane, all things considered.
| 2 We stayed at the Ripa Hotel in the Trastevere neighborhood. It's been completely redone in a minimalist mid-20th century, Italian style. This is a view from the 6th floor (where our room was) down to the 4 couches in the lobby below.
| 3 A view from the terrace of our 6th floor hotel room.

4 When you fly to Europe and lose a night of sleep, you don't try to rest; you go out and explore! And let your internal clock reset in the sunshine! We stumbled across an open-air farmers market.
| 5 Another view from the terrace, looking the other way.
| 6 Typical Roman street scene . . . not from the oldest part of town, but not the newest, either.
|
7 Motorcycles are everywhere in Rome! They are nearly as numerous as cars (which are largely tiny little things). Gas is, after all, nearly $6 a gallon there, at the moment.
| 8 The Piazza San Francesco a Ripa, in Trastevere (for which the Hotel Ripa was probably named).
| 9 Another view of the Piazza San Francesco a Ripa. Italians love plants; they cluster them on their balconies and on their roofs.
|
10 A typical street in one of the older sections of Rome (Trastevere). This is probably a restaurant. Notice the cobblestones. They are tough to walk on, even in flats.
| 11 I'm not kidding . . . they are REALLY tough to walk on.
| 12 Old church, old window.
|
13 Fiat in the foreground, restaurant on the left, bar in the distance. Typical scene. Good eateries are EVERYWHERE.
| 14 Another little alleyway. We saw wash hanging everywhere.
| 15 Madonna Assunta (Madonna Ascending), 18th century. This was just in a random alley, on the side of a random church. These beauties are everywhere in Rome.
|
16 Detail of the Madonna Assunta.
