Waiting for the train at Leonardo da Vinci airport, after landing around 7:30 am. Got a surprising amount of sleep on the plane, all things considered.

We stayed at the Ripa Hotel in the Trastevere neighborhood. It's been completely redone in a minimalist mid-20th century, Italian style. This is a view from the 6th floor (where our room was) down to the 4 couches in the lobby below.

A view from the terrace of our 6th floor hotel room.

When you fly to Europe and lose a night of sleep, you don't try to rest; you go out and explore! And let your internal clock reset in the sunshine! We stumbled across an open-air farmers market.

Another view from the terrace, looking the other way.

Typical Roman street scene . . . not from the oldest part of town, but not the newest, either.

Motorcycles are everywhere in Rome! They are nearly as numerous as cars (which are largely tiny little things). Gas is, after all, nearly $6 a gallon there, at the moment.

The Piazza San Francesco a Ripa, in Trastevere (for which the Hotel Ripa was probably named).

Another view of the Piazza San Francesco a Ripa. Italians love plants; they cluster them on their balconies and on their roofs.

A typical street in one of the older sections of Rome (Trastevere). This is probably a restaurant. Notice the cobblestones. They are tough to walk on, even in flats.

I'm not kidding . . . they are REALLY tough to walk on.

Old church, old window.

Fiat in the foreground, restaurant on the left, bar in the distance. Typical scene. Good eateries are EVERYWHERE.

Another little alleyway. We saw wash hanging everywhere.

Madonna Assunta (Madonna Ascending), 18th century. This was just in a random alley, on the side of a random church. These beauties are everywhere in Rome.

I love the pictures and the comments. I can't wait to see all the little alleyways and find the good eateries!
