2016 Elk in Montana
Elk at Slippery Ann on the CMR Wildlife refuge in Montana.
I have not been back to Slippery Ann since the fall of 2006. This was a real treat for me.
My wife, 'Viki,' whom I married 8+ years ago had never been to Slippery Ann before this trip.
Was able to add a few descriptions to some of the photo's.

This guy was right off the road when we saw him. Had a small herd and seemed to be content. We will call him Right guy at this point. You will understand what I mean as you scroll down the photo's.

I changed locations for more photos and this is the first time I got a photo of Left guy,
He and Right Guy, each had a herd and were trying to rob each other. It seems they had close to the same count of cows in their respective herd.

The Missouri river flows close to this location and it had flooded over it's banks so as the elk walked through the saplings you could hear the water sloshing as they walked. In fact farther down the road from this point it had washed over the road. Where I was taking these photo's from the road  was above this bottom and had not been hurt by the over flow.

These two bull look quite alike. This guy was on my left and the other is the next photo to the right of this one.

Enlarge photo 66
66
Their profiles side to side are almost identical but if you see this guy head on his antler spread is much narrower. It is a bit confusing at times and was hard for me to tell who was who unless I looked hard and long.
This is Left Guy

Right Guy left his small heard and went towards the cows that were sloshing in the water. He decided to stop and bugle a bit before he approached them.

Right Guy made more noise than Left Guy when some of the cows started following him.

Enlarge photo 114
114
He even looked back to see if more were coming and sure enough a few more were starting to move his way.

Enlarge photo 115
115
See how Left guy's antlers spread is not far apart yet he had 6 points per side just as Right guy had.

Left Guy on the left and Right guy on the right. This is the closest they ever came to locking antlers. They would head towards each other then at the last second turn and walk the same way then peel off in opposite directions.

This bunch of photo's are of Right Guy

Enlarge photo 134

That is Right Guy swooning the ladies into joining his little herd and it works. Several followed him when he went back to his little herd. The ladies were going a bit to slow for him it seemed so he bellowed and rushed at them and they picked up the pace a bit. One ran quit a ways towards the original little herd.

Enlarge photo 139
139
This was a small 5 point that was not in contention but hung around just in case he could impress a cow or two but but he was unable to get their attention.

Enlarge photo 140
140
Left guy again - By now you can probably see that there are a lot more photo's of the guy on the right because he was involved while this left guy kept coming and going.

This ended up being Left Guys herd. It was a bit bigger than Right Guy's but after the sun goes down we can not see what finally happens.
Right Guy had quite a few cows also. They were still bugling as we left.
