Week 5
Pups enter the second stage of socialization - the 'period of curiosity.'  They are curious and explore their environment, and they practice social behaviors as they interact with the pack.  The start of the fear period (a time when pups are super impressionable) begins this week, but won't crest until 8 weeks.  The key stress activity this week involves ears and eyes, and so we work to socialize the pups to loud noises prior to the crest of the fear period.  We also begin one-on-one sessions with the pups, spending a few minutes of private time with each day to help them build a positive self image.  Also this week, a special visitor- the doggy chiro!

Oh T, I so enjoy following the weekly progress of the pups! Things are kind of crazy in my life right now and not much internet time, but your crew always brings a smile to my face!

28 day old pups get wormed (Argh!  We lost photos!)
I don't know where they went, but this is the pups on day 28 and we took both portraits and a pic of the Nemex 2 wormer bottle (which I proceeded to spill all over the floor!)  I suppose you REALLY didn't want to see an example of a wormy poo, so perhaps its a GOOD thing they were lost...(and for those that did, SORRY!)

29 day old Tiny...
Plays with auntie Ruby.  Xena has turned the pup pack over to the nannies and allows the whole pack to freely interact with the pups.

Conan chews his rib bone in the background...
The pack is very curious of the nursing pups and gather round to observe.

Astro noses in....
He is curious about all that licking and pottying.  He was raised in this very nursery; do you suppose he remembers when he was this small?

Awww!
Nana Sonja rests her head on Xena's flank.  Its a cute pic, and also a gentle reminder of just WHO the alpha bitch is in the house!  And alpha must demonstrante rank among the pack -especially when the numbers of the pack increase - and many times its done in very subtle ways, just like this.

30 day old pups and a turban head...
Its early morning and I am getting ready for work.  The pups are so much fun at this stage that I just have to get a play session in to start my day.  Both Xena and Sonja are nursing the pups - the pups are getting breakfast before everyone else!

Geez.....
All this fuss over those pups - what about ME?

But Conan...
Just LOOK at 'em!  They are so cute!

Sonja cleans Snapper's hiney...
As other pups play and nurse.

Xena inspects...
It would appear Sonja did a fine job!

Xena in the middle...
Some pups are nursing on Xena now.  She is relaxed but still giving Ruby the 'watch out' look, as Ruby is still very excited and could play too rough!

T. and 'Tree'....
Dauntless, aka 'Tree of Gondor Head' aka 'Tree'.

She's a real hoot!
Just a real kissy-face kinda girl!  And fiesty, too!

Can you see the white tree on her face?
She has faint white eyebrows that connect to her blaze - it looks alot like the white on Xena's face.

30 day old Tiny tries taking a bite out of Sonja's ear.  The pups have tiny teeth now, and they are trying them out on everything - and they HURT, too!

Sonja doesn't seem to mind being used as a teething toy!

Dauntless is scrambling off of Sonja, Snapper is sound asleep at the milk bar, and Tiny is digging her fangs in hard as she can!

Sometimes its easier to redirect than to correct!  Tiny now nudges a bone.

There's no growling or competition.  Sonja nudges the bone with Tiny, perfectly willing to share or let Tiny carry it off.

Tiny chews her bone at Sonja's paw. Nana Sonja is just content to sit with the pups and cuddle while they play.

Its a perk....
When you nurse the pups, you get to clean out their feed pan too!

Nemo goes solo....
30 day old Nemo in a one-on-one session.  I have taken him away from the litter to the dining room, where he is not so familiar with the surroundings.

He sniffs, he explores....
The pix are not good - they are all taken when I first put the pups down, so all you can see are my feet!  Nemo seems to be a real explorer, not fussing or worrying, but very curious.

And he's off!
Sessions last about 5 minutes.  The intent is to build a pups self esteem and confidence.  These little sessions are not a true window into the pups core temperament, rather, by striking while the iron is hot developmentally, we are actually shaping the pups temperament.  Pups become more and more confient as sessions continue thru out the week.
