IMG 1650 All the Grizzly bears and wolves you see below are in the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center which is in West Yellowstone. They allow you to take your camera in and photograph them all you want. There is a young and old pack of wolves in their own habitat there also. Our first visit to the center was February 9th....
| IMG 1651 Groups of bears are released into a special pen where they look for food hidden by keepers. It keeps them busy looking. They are active and you get to see them in action rather than laying around.
| IMG 1660 There are several kinds of bears in the discovery center....
| IMG 1662 This guy was just let out and is looking for food.
|
IMG 1658 They smell around looking for food.
| IMG 1684 copy These wolves are 11 - 14 years old
| IMG 1692 Older wolf......
| IMG 1707 This is an older wolf.... we spent the February 10th at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center and Thursday also....
|
IMG 1715 It must be down there...... This was our Monday tour of the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center visit.
| IMG 1740 This guy wondered around looking in several places for food.....
| IMG 1745 There he is sniffing again...
| IMG 1755 Grandpa
|
 IMG 1756 Grandpa
| IMG 1762 Old wolf
| IMG 1805 This Raven flew up and was looking for some left over food the bears may have left. They are always close by during feeding time too.
| IMG 1806 The Ravens like to hang around the Bear and Wolf enclosures to scrap up extra treats the bears and wolves miss at feeding time.
|
IMG 1816 2 year Old Wolves are in this enclosure.
| IMG 1818 They are sometime active but lay around for a while too.....
| IMG 1751 These are the old wolves. They are 12 - 14 years old.
| IMG 1752 Three photos of a grandpa?
|
 IMG 1753 Old wolf
| IMG 1757 Grandpa walks.........
| IMG 1758 Nice looking wolf....last of the older ones in this series.....
| IMG 1820 Not sure what this wolf was watching but I liked the pose.
|
IMG 1851 This was a small elk cow herd that was along the Madison River coming from West Yellowstone into the park. There were a few bison (buffalo) there too.
| IMG 1853 This was a big elk herd at one time.....
| IMG 1888 This was February 10th as we go along the Madison River on our way to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
| IMG 1891 The elk herd again..
|
 IMG 1892 Along the Madison......
| IMG 1898 Bison of course
| IMG 1899 These are a few close ups of the buffalo.
| IMG 1900 What it looks like in the area...
|
IMG 1901 It was snowing a bit......
| IMG 1902 They have to clear away the snow but in this area the warm water kept the snow thin.... easier to find food to eat.
| IMG 1903 They like the open areas if there is food...
| IMG 1907 A few Canada geese near where the Bison were feeding......
|
IMG 1905 There weren't to many Bison in this bunch but they were well fed.....
| IMG 1906 Close up.......
| IMG 1908 I like the Bison......
| IMG 1909 They were moving around so I got a few different shots.......
|
IMG 1910 There were bulls, cows and younger Bison in this group....
| IMG 1912 This shows the background in relationship to where they were....
| IMG 1913 This was to the right of the last shot....
| IMG 1914 A lone bull near the water.....
|
IMG 1915 We're about done here......
| IMG 1919 It seems they spend most of their time eating just to survive the cold winters of Yellowstone.
| IMG 1921 Gibbon falls........
| IMG 1924 I can't remember the name of this .....
|
IMG 1928 There Bison were farther down the road in an open spot. It was snowing so they are a bit blurred.....
| IMG 1930 There are geese in the river....
| IMG 1942 The Bombardier we were in the first day, February 10th....it's name was Rosebud. That's Viki... (my wife) The second day we were in Griz.
| IMG 1951 This is Lower Yellowstone Falls. It is the most photographed falls in the park..... This view is from Artists point.
|
 IMG 1955 A distant shot...
| IMG 1959 Zoomed in.....
| IMG 1961 Lower Yellowstone Falls.. This view is from Artists Point
| IMG 1978 I took many different shots... It is hard to quit trying to get a better shot so you keep trying. It's going no where but it still is beautiful.
|
IMG 1969 Notice the blue-green ice on the right?
| IMG 1971 That ice below the falls is the frozen spray from the falls
| IMG 1979 My bride......
| IMG 1987 This is a medium zoom shot....
|
IMG 1881 Along the Madison River going into the park from West Yellowstone, MT
| IMG 1996 Upper Yellowstone falls......they are not as pretty as the lower fall is.
| IMG 1998 This used to be a vehicle bridge but now is a foot bridge above Upper Yellowstone Falls....... not sure where it goes or comes from.
| IMG 2006 This is the Upper Falls of Yellowstone
|
IMG 2201 Part of the herd below the road we were on that the bison joined.
| IMG 2204 Same herd
| IMG 2009 Two swan on the Yellowstone River...
| IMG 2050 copy They have their heads under water feeding a lot so you get quite a few shots of their main body and of a head stand in the water as they reach as deep to feed as they can.
|
IMG 2038 There were a lot of swans on the water.....
| IMG 2065 This swan kept it's tail in the air a lot.......
| IMG 2097 The hills lining the sides of the Hayden Valley where coyotes and Bison could be seen....
| IMG 2039 They mate for life too....
|
IMG 2100 Lots of snow with trees on top.....
| IMG 2102 It was snowing on the other side.....
| IMG 2123 We didn't see sun much the two days of snow coach rides we took.....but it was still beautiful
| IMG 2128 The snow was intense up there.....
|
IMG 2166 Bison in the valley...
| IMG 2172 Buffalo calf and cow in the road in Hayden Valley
| IMG 2177 Skyline profile....
| IMG 2178 Bull feeding in the snow.... in Hayden Valley
|
IMG 2179 I liked these horizon profile shots.....
| IMG 2181 This was a young bison and it decided we were to close so it headed up the hill away from us.
| IMG 2191 More skyline profiles....
| IMG 2195 This bison came down the hill from the right and started our way at a steady walk. Then........
|
IMG 2196 I am not sure if it was a big cow or a bull myself but it turned to its' right, our left and headed down the hill where more Bison were.... the steep grade caused it to go fast and it threw up a lot of snow when it hit a low spot on his way down the steep hill.
| IMG 2197 It starting its' down hill run....
| IMG 2198 It kicked up a lot of snow right after this when it went into a dip in the ground that it didn't see. The snow was deep and it plowed it out with a big burst of fluffy snow. I was surprised it kept its' footing but it did and went all the way to the bottom of the hill.
| IMG 2205 This photo was taken from where I was setting in the back of the Bombardier......
|
IMG 2206 Dave our driver and tour guide....
| IMG 2217 A coyote looks for creatures under the snow....
| IMG 2219
| IMG 2220 Sticks it's head in the snow and tries to catch the varmint under the snow.. It eventually caught something and promptly ate it without showing it to us.
|
IMG 2227 I got up closer with the zoom to this bunch........
| IMG 2230 They weren't bothered by the snow coaches in the least.....
| IMG 2239 Hope you get a perspective of things with all the different angles and zooms both in and out.
| IMG 2247 Up close and icy cold.....
|
IMG 2240 Can you see the blue-green ice better here?
| IMG 2241 There isn't anyone on the overlook above the falls..... Bad place to be in the dead of winter?
| IMG 2252 Lower Yellowstone falls from another angle.
| IMG 2243 It is hard to see the water coming over the falls but it's clear here.
|
IMG 2253 I never get tired of photographing this falls....it is so majestic no matter what time of year you are there...
| IMG 2254 Zoom out scene....
| IMG 2255 Zoomed a bit more than before......shows all the river without ice in this shot.
| IMG 2258 Across the canyon from where we are.
|
IMG 2260 The Canyon to the left of our outlook and below the falls.
| IMG 2262 Looking in the opposite direction of the falls.
| IMG 2265 This is farther to the left than the photo before this....
| IMG 2266 The river way down at the bottom
|
IMG 2267 wider view of the Yellowstone River...
| IMG 2269 One last look at the falls.....then on to another outlook that looks down the canyon only.
| IMG 2271 Another overlook that also looks down the river from the falls areas. You can not see the falls from this outlook.
| IMG 2282 As far as you can see down the canyon from this point.
|
 IMG 2285 Down canyon again.....
| IMG 2286 A look down the river
| IMG 2291 Down stream through the trees...
| IMG 2293 The left side of the valley up close.....
|
IMG 2294 Another look through the trees......
| IMG 2295 Buffalo Herd on the way back our along the Gibbon River
| IMG 2298 Closer up of the Buffalo
| IMG 2301 We take a closer look at who's laying down....
|
 IMG 2303 Whole group
| IMG 2314 Cow elk along the Madison....
| IMG 2315
| IMG 2318 Two cows along the Madison as we head back to West Yellowstone, MT.
|

| IMG 2321 Last Photo of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Tour the 10th of February 2009.
| IMG 2331 Fire Hole Falls on the Fire Hole river...
| IMG 2332 Fire Hole Falls in Fire Hole Canyon. This is on the way to Old Faithful
|
IMG 2333 There's Grizz and the gang...... Joann was our driver and tour guide this day. (I sure hope I got her name spelled corect)
| IMG 2340 The same water never runs down that falls unless it goes up into the sky first of down into the ground first..... That doesn't happen every where, you know.
| IMG 2342 Fire Hole Falls up close.... Because the water comes from the geysers and hot pools along the river the water I believe they said is 45 degrees here even in the winter. To cold to swim in but to hot to freeze.
| IMG 2344 Three Bombardier together...
|
IMG 2346 Now there just happens to be 4 together.....
| IMG 2347 People are every where....
| IMG 2348 To the left is Fire Hole Falls
| IMG 2358 See I told ya so.....
|
IMG 2375 Bison we came to on our way to Old Faithful
| IMG 2376 Another bunch of Bison in the same location.
| IMG 3380 A single Cow elk along the river from Madison Junction to Old Faithful. She could be wolf food if she doesn't get out of that area soon.
| IMG 2382 This cow found some good long dry grass and she was busy chowing down too...
|
 IMG 2396 More bison........
| IMG 2397 They didn't move around much either.....
| IMG 2398 Cow and calf crossing the road...
| IMG 3360 Bison grubbing for food in the snow. This photo was our first one for February 11th as we head along the Madison River towards Madison Junction then head south to Old Faithful.
|
IMG 2430 Hot springs and pools along the ski - snow shoe trail to Old Faithful...... 2.5 miles...
| IMG 2414 Feeding time for one youngster.....
| IMG 2415 My guess she's not pregnant or the calf wouldn't be feeding....She'd be dry......
| IMG 2422 The river is pretty steamy with all the little geysers and hot pools draining into it.
|
IMG 3386 Another picture of the cow elk along the fire hole river
| IMG 3392 These guys were in a herd on the way to Old Faithful
| IMG 3405 She found some good eating in a wet area with old dried grass. This must have been under a lot of snow.
| IMG 3410 Younger buffalo taking a rest
|
IMG 3414 I wasn't ready for this coyote but it stopped after it passed us by on the trail and waited till I got the battery in the camera.
| IMG 3417 It just stood there as I got ready.
| IMG 3418 Decided to look at the right time it seemed
| IMG 3422 We left it standing in that spot..... not sure where it was going. It was only 20 feet from us of less, on the trail.
|
IMG 2424 There is a lot of water running into the river at this point....
| IMG 2428 Just one of numerous hot springs.....
| IMG 2432 Edge of another hot pool.......
| IMG 2433 More than half the hot pool....
|
IMG 2434 Gives new meaning to the word, green tee?
| IMG 2442 In almost every direction your look in this area you will see steam coming up.........
| IMG 2444 It keeps the ground bare where hot water runs over it....
| IMG 2446 It makes this a winter wonder land for sure.........
|
IMG 2448 Looking back at that bare spot....
| IMG 2449 More steam every where.....
| IMG 2451 A closer look at an area photographed before......
| IMG 2455 This geyser was just slowing down from spewing water I think.....
|
IMG 2456 Viki heads towards Old Faithful.
| IMG 2457 Pretty good sized pool here.....
| IMG 2458 closer look at it......
| IMG 2459 A look at a geyser with a big cone on it......
|
IMG 2461 Not sure which Geyser this is.....
| IMG 2462 The same geyser again......
| IMG 2465 Another hot steamy place......
| IMG 2467 A look at all the steam......
|
IMG 2474 The river with the steam coming from all the geysers and hot pool around the area...
| IMG 2480 Castle Geyser.....
| IMG 2482 Castle Geyser again.....
| IMG 2486 This is the area close to Old Faithful....
|
 IMG 2489 Old Faithful Lodge.......
| IMG 2493 Old Faithful Blows
| IMG 2494 You see more steam from this far back.....
| IMG 2495 Steam raises high in the air. We were in the area of Castle Geyser when it blew so I took these photo's from that area. It is actually more impressive from a distance because the steam is so visible.
|
IMG 2496 I backed off with the zoom a bit......
| IMG 2504 The following are various phases of Old Faithful as it calms down....... It always lets off a bit of steam.
| IMG 2506 Old Faithful is calming down again....
| IMG 2507 The steam goes straight up.....
|
IMG 2508 We are getting close to Old Faithful...
| IMG 2510 From near Old Faithful after we arrived
| IMG 2514 Left the Old Faithful area.....this is the paint pots area
| IMG 2520 Paint pots
|
IMG 2522 Steam was really coming out of this hole......
| IMG 2524 There was a geyser really throwing water around but it wasn't going to high in the air...
| IMG 2527 Before the earth quake this area was a parking lot... after that it turned into the bubbling mud of paint pots..
| IMG 2528 Some of the curbing of the parking lot can be seen if someone points out that it was a parking lot....... they you see it quite easily.
|
IMG 2530 The curbing is in the steam to the left a bit of center..... not sure if you can see it though.
| IMG 2542 More steam......
| IMG 2597 An anxious wolf.... These were the young 2 yr olds. The old pack went into their pen and got fed.
| IMG 2548 That tree is collecting ice from the steam........
|
IMG 2557 A pool below the paint pots area...
| IMG 2563 Leaving the paint pots area on our way to Madison Junction then on to West Yellowstone, MT. The snow coach rides are over for us at least for this year.
| IMG 2579 It was feeding time and they missed it because one wouldn't stay in the holding pen so they could hide the food in their area.... the keeper won't go in with them.... Can't say I'd go in there either.
| IMG 2587 He was up close........
|
IMG 2580 The activity for quite a few minutes was a frenzy until they finally realized that the feeding time was not going to happen.
| IMG 2593 They were real active for quite a few minutes thinking they were going to be fed. Maybe tomorrow they will go into the holding pen and stay?
| IMG 2607 They looked around and ran around quite quite a bit too..
| IMG 2616 Ahead and to the right of this wolf is where the holding pen was...
|
IMG 2617 Still looking and wondering around hoping food will happen...
| IMG 2618 They are still running around in expectation of getting fed...
| IMG 2619 Another Day at the Discovery Center. A young 2 yr. old wolf in the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center at West Yellowstone. It's worth the visit.
| IMG 2621 This was the beginning of the lesson on submission...
|
IMG 2624 Domination in action.. this was Thursday the 12th of Feb.. We spend the better part of the day there...
| IMG 2625 Now we know who's in charge?
| IMG 2626 When you are up you're up and when you're down you're down.
| IMG 2627 Now we know
|
IMG 3436 A cow and last spring calf on an island in the river...
| IMG 3441 Up close of the cow and calf as we were leaving the Old Faithful area
| IMG 3464 Old wolf in the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
| IMG 3703 Grizzly in the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
|
IMG 3706 Same bear same area
| IMG 3714 Another bear resting
| IMG 3715 another view while it relaxes
| IMG 3721 I thought it was going to look at me but it had a buddy it was watching

|
 IMG 3831 Young wolf
| IMG 3847 Old wolf at feeding time, it's food was in front of it.
| IMG 3875 Eating a snack
| IMG 3857 Old wolf looking for hidden food
|
IMG 3877 They do a lot of resting
| IMG 3885 Looking for hidden food
| IMG 3953 They are watching others look or eat the food they found
| IMG 3577 This is the biggest bear in the Center. Think his name was Sam. He weighed over 1,100 pounds... Much bigger than his sister.
|
IMG 3578 He was walking around looking for food.
| IMG 3580 That's a lot of bear....
| IMG 3598 This is a smaller bear.. might be his sister, I can't remember now.
| IMG 3599 It was looking for food too.
|
 IMG 3601 Still looking....
| IMG 3808 These two bears were also related and about the same size... They were just playing but if they played with us like that we'd get hurt for sure.
| IMG 3812 They looked much bigger when standing on their hind legs too.
| |
