2011 Desert Big Horn Sheep
The first 4 photos in this album were taken Sept 9, 2013 and the last time I saw many sheep was in 2011. There wasn't as much activity in 2011 as there was in 2010 but there were some nice young Rams. Didn't see or hear any head butts. There was only one older Ram that I saw in 2011. We were moving the last half of November so my photo trips were limited. I saw far fewer sheep but took more pictures per sheep so there isn't as much to show without duplicating photo's.

# 4 that's all. There weren't any sheep in Fruita Valley again this year except for small numbers and they were not where a good photos could be taken and very scarce at that.

Do you know what kind of bird this is?

Nice!!

Got a photo of this guy up close. One of my favorite photo's. He had done a few head butts in the past for sure.

These 3 pictures were taken on November 4th while looking down into Fruita Canyon by looking over the side of the canyon from a pull out close to the top. The next two photo's were taken from below them at the Balanced rock turn out.

This shows the small ram stopping before it went off the ledge.

This shows them all feeding.

This photos and the next one show the sheep from below after I'd driven down the canyon to just below where they were.

This young sheep was going up the canyon now.

This young ewe was in front of the others. #6 of 6

It was raining the 5th of November when I took this photo. There was this ram a small yearling ram and two ewes. This photo is 1 of 10 taken that day.
Enlarge photo 15 IMG 5195
They gave me several poses. Their coats were pretty wet but they didn't seem to mind.
Enlarge photo 16 IMG 5198
This guy was a real ham and wasn't to weary. A good telephoto lens helps to.
Enlarge photo 17 IMG 5203
I finally had to just drive away because they didn't move very much.
Enlarge photo 18 IMG 5218
He was chewing and I tried to get him not chewing but it is hard to time it right every chew.
Enlarge photo 19 IMG 5229
I like this pose.
Enlarge photo 20 IMG 5220
He gave one of the ewes a strong gaze, trying to impress her but she didn't seem to notice. (at least she didn't react enough for me to catch it) I didn't hear her whisper anyway.
Enlarge photo 21 IMG 5232
This is one of the ewes.
Enlarge photo 22 IMG 5254
Glad the leaves were off this bush. He wasn't hiding very well it seems.
Enlarge photo 23 IMG 5266
He was slowly grazing his way up the hill to the right. #10 of 10

These photos were taken the 10th of November. They were above the first curve up from the Fruita entrance to CNM. 1 of 7 photos...
Enlarge photo 26 IMG 5627
There were about 18 in this bunch and they were just at the edge of a shadow on the first left hand curve after the entrance to CNM on the Fruita side.
Enlarge photo 27 IMG 5628
They were scattered up and down the hill.
Enlarge photo 28 IMG 5632
The Ram was sticking close to the ewe with the radio collar on.
Enlarge photo 29 IMG 7333
This is a close up of two of the ewes
Enlarge photo 30 IMG 7334
They were bunched up all along the shadowed part
Enlarge photo 31 IMG 7335
I decided it was time to go up the hill to see if more sheep were up farther
Enlarge photo 32 IMG 5633
I ran onto about 18 or so sheep on the 11th of Nov. This is the biggest ram that day.
Enlarge photo 33 IMG 5637
This is a long distance shot of the same ram.
Enlarge photo 34 IMG 5640
I think he is a middle aged ram since he didn't have any of the scars and scraps on his horns like the older ones have. He is a handsome ram I'd say.
Enlarge photo 35 IMG 5644
These are the young and older ewes that were with him that day.
Enlarge photo 36 IMG 5646
This young ewe seemed to be posing for me. She wasn't that far away and they didn't seem to notice me.
Enlarge photo 37 IMG 5647
A younger one close up.
Enlarge photo 38 IMG 5650
This bunch was in this little valley for quite a while.
Enlarge photo 39 IMG 5680
When the ram started up the other they side they all seemed to be following him.
Enlarge photo 40 IMG 5685
This was a lively bunch and they were grazing as they went down the hill.
Enlarge photo 41 IMG 5697
After this the ram slowly started up the other side.
Enlarge photo 42 IMG 5699
He came to this point and it seemed he took a little time deciding where he wanted to go.
