RECOLLECTIONS OF THE DESERT 2005
During our annual desert visit in the Coachella Valley, California, home to the resort cities of Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Cathedral City & Indio, I tried to capture some of the flavor of the resort atmosphere and the natural beauty and rugged features of the surrounding areas.

Images are available in three sizes so the best fit for the viewer's screen may be selected.  Click on individual thumbnail for an enlargement, or click on slide show to see enlargements of the entire album.

Another roadside scene on Rt 74.  There must be a story behind the cross placed at top center.
Enlarge photo 9 IMG 9455
Coachella Valley as seen from Santa Rosa Mtns.  Later learned that smoke in center came from $2 Mil house fire in Rancho Mirage.

Big Horn Country Club at base of Santa Rosa Mtns.  Membership can be yours for $330,000 initiation and annual dues of over $20,000!

From the Santa Rosa Mtns on Rt 74 you can see one end of the Salton Sea as well as the Coachella Valley vista.

Spotted this docile pet patiently waiting for his master to come out of the sports bar at the "Beer Hunter" in La Quinta.

Desert art works always surprise, here a metal cactus on Fred Waring Drive.

Landscaping features colorful plants with low water requirements.

The ultimate in painted cows.  Shown along the famous El Paseo where ususual art objects are always on display.

I took this one thru reflective showroom glass.  Couldn't resist capturing a hand made, all wood motorcycle.  It can be yours for $62,000.

At first one feels being watched by the cop, but it's only a stuffed figure guarding the door of this art gallery.

Hot air balloons are seen most every afternoon, skimming the tree tops with tourists peering from the basket.
Enlarge photo 22 IMG 9651
Every balloon includes some kind of commerical advertising.
Enlarge photo 23 IMG 9595
From a distance, this one appeared to be lower than usual.
Enlarge photo 24 IMG 9598
From my position on the 17th fairway it was obvious that this one was going to land on the course.

The balloon preparing to touch down on the 7th fairway.

Just before touching ground.  Don't know the reason for emergency landing, but couldn't gain altitude.  No injuries or damages reported.

We were amused to see personal vanity plates on big old workhorse truck.

This morning the snow capped backdrop  looked so close.

Fun billboard along the I-10 advertises a turf farm.  Great demand  for turf in this golf crazy area.

The 5th @ Woodhaven is a short par 4 which plays games with your mind.  A bowling alley fairway with water on the right and trees on the left.  Make a par and leave with a sigh and a smile.

Approaching the 17th tee @ Woodhaven.  My vote for most beautiful spot on the course.
Enlarge photo 34 IMG 9672
View from the 17th tee box.  Par 5, and don't try to cross the water hazard unless you are GOOD!

Close up view of the planter area near the 17th tee.

More 17th tee plant area.

As one can see, I really dig the landscaping and color at the 17th.

New moon forming on a clear and balmy night.
Enlarge photo 39 IMG 9658
Full moon probably a week or 10 days from now.
Enlarge photo 40 IMG 9666
One or two nights later the moon looks a bit larger.
