Floor Molds in the Foundry
We used these for making billets, which are solid cylindrical-shaped pieces of metal, sent to the machine shop.

Cores in the Foundry
These are made of sand, and this is what they look like before they are put together.  They are so large, they have to be made in pieces which are glued together.

Rocking arc furnace in Foundry
This furnace was out of date and was replaced when the ship was dry-docked in Mobile and Pascacoula, in 1972, before the Gilmore went to Italy.

Arc coming out of the furnace
This is what the furnace looked like when it was melting metal....the arc illuminated the smoke as it escaped.
