1958 Agnew's arid acres, Victorville California. We had just purchased the trailer and camped out here whenever time permitted - after we dispossed a huge rattlesnake. The coyote well that collected water down deep in the rocks is just behind us.

1961 and 1962 were tumultuous years for our family and evidently the Christmas picture was one of the casualties. Malcolm finally got his degree and was posted to the Pentagon in Washington DC. Mother persuaded me to buy a house and offered to front the money for it. Malcolm and I went shopping and bought the McLean house.

1964, the Dumbarton brats gather for the Christmas picture in the side yard. The tree behind them was a great climbing challenge.

1965, Marian finally found a way to keep everybody busy and family fights to a minimum: music lessons. Frank Fisher loaned us his piano and everyone else had something to tootle or twang on. Pimienta, our Dalmatian had arrived.

1966 everyone is growing up and Pimi had 8 puppies and we kept one and named her  Samantha. From this time on, Pimi and Sam where the neighborhood guard dogs. Pimi accompanied Charles on his paper route every morning. We paid a lot of vet bills.

1967 Here’s the Christmas tree that we just cut raised in the  new room, a 25’ X 28’ addition added to the rear of the house to accommodate expanded family gatherings. Marian designed it and everyone was drafted to learn rudimentary carpentry.  Finally had space for a dining room table and a huge workbench. Stone floor, exterior siding and cathedral ceiling made it bulletproof land washable with a garden hose. Glass walls looked out on the 18 acres of woods behind us. Anna Marie Fisher, C&J’s great aunt chipped in to help pay for it. That's Charles sitting on his unicycle that he rode in Malcolm’s Barbershop Show that year.

1968 We’re still looking very conventional. Everyone was doing as well as could be expected at school and busy with music lessons and outside activities. Leslie was starring at sports. Marian had gone to work as a substitute teacher.

1969 The family in front of the huge fireplace in the new room, finally finished.  Samantha has a litter of two puppies.  When Pimi tried to mother them, we had the dog fight of the century. Marian finally threw Pimi over the back fence.  Charles still has the scars. More vet bills.

19?? Peter has died and Kate moved to Distaff Hall in Washington. She visited frequently and became an integral part of the family.  She had been born at Letterman Army hospital in San  Fransisco, lived through the 1906 earthquake.  She  had a great sense of humor and entertained us with wild stories about the Old Days as an Army brat, living in the Philippines. I wish I had had the good sense to tape her stories.
