Montana & Colorado 2006 to 2008
These photo's were taken within a 100 mile radius of Lewistown, Montana in 2006 and the most recent were Photo's taken in the Silverton area of  western Colorado on the 4th of July 2008
We were in Fort Benton this past summer 2013 and I have added the additional photo's since they have finished putting the walls around the replica of Fort Benton on the Missouri River since I was last there in 2006.

I lived in Lewistown from September 1980 until October 19, 2005 then moved to Fruita, Colorado to be near my Dad.

Two Doe disagree and decide to dance it seems. The one on the left eventually nailed the one on right ,dead center on her nose with her leg. OUCH! I'm sure... The disagreement ended soon after. I think the one on the left was an older doe with more experience. They are pretty tall when they stand on their hind legs compared to on all fours.

On July 28, 2013 we arrived in Fort  Benton late in the day so we went up river almost to Loma, Mt. crossed the river and camped upstream along the Missouri. The next morning we went back down river and took the photo's at Fort Benton.

This is a closer view of the bridge.(only a foot bridge these days) The modern highway bridge is behind it.

This is looking up river at the bridge that was designed originally designed to swivel in the middle to let the big paddle boats pass but the channel was to shallow and I am not sure if any paddle boats got that far if at all. One sunk on the right between this ramp and the bridge. Parts of it still lay in the river. (A sign marks the spot)

Then to the left to show the West wall that goes back to the fron of the fort. It now has four walls instead of just the one in front. So they put three walls up since 2006.

This is looking at the north side towards the back wall that goes west. Actually this fort is turned so that the front faces south east. It is turned 45 degrees from actual north, east, south ,west. Each corner faces real north, east, south, west.  Google Maps shows fort. You can see it by looking up Fort Benton, Montana. (Satellite)

This thing on the left is a Buffalo Robe Pur press that they used in preparing the pelts for shipment via paddle boat to St. Louis Missouri.

Keelboat Mandan. Early day freight boats that ran the river before steamers came, I believe. They were 60 feet or so long.

I took several pictures to give you a  good idea of what these boats looked like. This is a replica that was used to make a movie and is loaned to Ft. Benton by the Historical Society

That brown part is where they kept the hides and goods to buy and trade along the river. They poled or pulled them up the river from the shore.

Old Historic Grand Union Hotel on Missouri River in Ft. Benton, Montana. It is the Farthermost point up the Missouri River that Steam ships could go. It was called Union Hotel to help heal the Civil War memories. Read the next photo...

I just happened along as a 2 point Mule buck and a doe with two fawns were crossing the recently torn up rail bed. The Buck and Fawn were right close together and both turned to look at me and the dog, so I took their picture. Taken Sept. 8, 2006

I spooked up 4 Mule doe and 3 fawns while walking. They didn't run very far so I was able to get quite a few poses out of them. This fawn was looking into the morning sun and the pose was a bit unusual with it's head back and back arched like this.

These deer were walking across the dam of a pond that was just dug. There were 9 in the bunch. I was walking in the opposite direction on the abondoned RR track bed. Taken Sept. 9, 2006
