"During Victorian times, the higa (clenched fist), was a symbol thought to bring good luck, ward against evil spirits and the evil eye."
It is not clear when the popular amulet called "Higa" or "Figa," or less often "Fig," came into use, but as evidenced by its long history it is one of the most enduring. Examples have been found dating to the Roman era and even the Roman predecessors, the ancient Etruscans, used the higa charms. (http://www.wavyworld.com/~yronwode/manofico.html)
"Higas (also known as figas) are protective amulets in the shape of a clenched fist. They are made out of a variety of materials and range in size, perhaps reflecting the fact that figas were commonly worn from infancy through adulthood. These amulets were introduced by colonizing Spaniards and are still widely used today throughout Latin America." http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/micro/gallery/archaeology/arch1.html

The ivory clenched fist was probably a pendant.
The clenched fist holding the bar was probably a watch fob attachment.
The poured glass stopper was maybe a perfume stopper.

| "Did you know the piano man pin (#9) is the exact same piano man on the cover of Joe Jackson's "Night & Day" album??? I knew I had seen it before so I got the album out and for sure it is the exact same piano guy. Maybe it is supposed to be Joe Jackson? It sure does resemble him. I read the liner notes & all album cover art is done by an artist named Philip Burke. Pretty wild! The little tiny rock artist pins were so popular in the 80's, they used to sell them over the counter at record stores- All of us new wave punk kids used to wear them on denium jackets and the skinny ties and on our bandanas."
MANY THANKS TO AMELIA for her creative, super sluething abilites to bring an identity to the piano man.
