1 After a dusting of white, the design is lightly sketched in pencil and I start filling in...
| 2 I'm trying to use as few colors as possible, working on my chrome rendering
| 3 My original photograph has a brick house reflected in the polished metal, not exactly what I'd like to put on the jacket. I'll make a green background and put in some trees in the final details, but I'm not close to that stage yet.
| 4 Shading grey, transparent royal blue and green are the only tones I've used so far.
|
5 Since I don't own a motorcycle, my reference photo is all I have to go by. I build the details in small steps.
| 6 It's starting to look like a Harley V Twin.
| 7 The temptation to rush, so I can see how it turns out is overwhelming, but I'm taking my time, so I don't have to go back and fix any screw-ups.
| 8 Getting closer.
|
9 I tint some of the spots with color to give me hints as to where I will put the reflected details when I get to that stage.
| 10 I can't believe I still haven't even gotten to the frame yet.
| 11 I never thought it'd take so long to paint a motorcycle engine
| 12 It's starting to come together and I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel
|
13 A few more componenets and I'll be able to do the frame and accessories.
| 14 more details.
| 15 I put in the highway peg and decide to call it quits for the night.
| 16 The bulk of the engine is done, now for all the minute details
|
17 Because of the jacket being a different shape than my reference photo, not everything is in exact proportion. I have to take some "artistic liberties" with the Evolution Engine.
| 18 The oil tank is highly reflective, so I wait to do that last, after roughing out the shape.
| 19 I can't imagine that this was a plain jacket, now that all this mechanical mayhem has been filled in! I only will hint at the seat, since it's black and I want to add some lettering at the top.
| 20 What do you think? Is this a motorcycle engine, or what?
|
21 Now I add a reflection of me taking the photo which I based this painting on.
| 22 There you have it. The original had a brick building in the background. It wasn't very picturesque, so I took more liberties here.
| 23 Just about done. I'll do the lettering, clean up the leather and put a top coat over the artwork, then put it on the auction block.
| 24 Masking tape removed, I wanted to give it a ragged star appearance, which explains the randomly torn masking. I have to remove a lot of tape glue now before I put the top coat on it. The white strip on the top will feature some lettering, touting the Harely Davidson Evolution Engine.
|
25 Not especially happy with the "torn edge" look, I decide to change it. I hung a piece of chain across the back to see how that looks.
| 26 Next I airbrushed a rendition on the jacket. I think it looks much better than before.
| 27 Now I do the lettering across the top.
| 28 I freehand the R so it looks like graffiti.
|
29 And here's the finished product.
