1 Frank, my landlord is a hot rodder, but working two jobs, having a huge mortgage, and a new baby makes his Buick dreams seem far off, he drives a Honda. So I airbrushed the Honda logo on the front of this Tee.
| 2 Now with a bit of apologetic rhetoric, I've finished the front part, now for the flip side...
| 3 In the past when I've tried to draw on T-shirts, the results have been dismal, so I sketched out this drawing to use as a guide for body lines, tire placement, windows etc.
| 4 I start by cutting out crucial elements and lightly spraying the negative masks. I save the cut-out sections to use later. As a kid growing up looking at hot rod magazines and seeing the Ed Roth drawings in the backs of comic books, I was always into the exaggerated cars with engines the size of jumbo jets.
|
5 I grew up drawing Rat Finks on almost everything I owned. So far I've never airbrushed one, and I certainly have never done one this small before. I drew out an overlay and cut it out, to minimize the chances of making it the wrong size on the shirt.
| 6 I freehanded the bulk of the Rat Fink, once I filled in the outlines.
| 7 Now it's time to fill in more details of the Hot Rod Honda.
| 8 I'm satisfied with the way it's looking so far, so I use the cut outs to protect what I've already painted from overspray.
|
9 Some smoke in all the right places helps give this a cartoony feel.
| 10 I add my signature and I'm ready to call this one complete!
| 11 Here's the overall shot of the back of the Tee. For anyone who's not into Kar Kulture, a tuner is a small engined, front wheel drive car that's been modified to create huge horsepower for its'size. Hot rodders on the other hand, like to cram big engines into small, light cars to give them the go-power they like. There's always been some animosity between traditional hot rodders and "tuners", as seen in the crappy movie, "The Fast And The Furious". It isn't quite as cut and dried as that, but rodders prefer their style of cars over the new street demons.
