Lately I've been seeing alot of TV coverage of people doing " Extreme Pumpkin Carving". So I thought I'd give it a try...I started with a decent sized gourd.

Lately I've been seeing alot of TV coverage of people doing " Extreme Pumpkin Carving". So I thought I'd give it a try...I started with a decent sized gourd.
2
The first step is to shave off the outer layer of flesh. I used a cheese grater for this maneuver.
3
I sketched my idea with a Flair pen but it rubbed off after a little bit of handling, so I just started scoring it with a set of wood carving blades.
4
One of the experts said that it was important NOT to remove the stem. So I have no clue as to how thick the meat of this thing is. As I carved, a lot of pieces broke off and the blades tended to follow the grain of the pumpkin.
5
It's looking close to what I had in mind, but I would like to make the nose more prominent.
6
I also noticed that the right eye is much larger than the left, so I'll have to try and remedy that.
7
The more I take away, the more that I see wrong with it. It is now Halloween 2014 and I need to get some sleep before I head to work. Rushing always makes an artist do his best, don'tcha think?
8
For a first try, it's not bad but I'm not 100% pleased with it. Next year I'm starting much earlier!

Here's how it'll look to all the trick or treaters.
