1 John Lennon has been portrayed on T-shirts a bazillion times. I wanted to do something a little bit different, so I decided to create a new soft drink. I first took a snapshot of a soda can to use as a reference. I then cut out a mask for the outline.
| 2 Now after adding the basic shading of the cylinder, I begin my rendition of the Beatle, with some fleshtone, roughing in the outline of his face.
| 3 I'm trying to go easy here, because it's not hard to get too dark at this stage of the artwork.
| 4 Since I'm not very adept at freehand work, I go slow. You can see where I had a blob of blue paint shoot right under his schnozola. Trying to camouflage that boo boo will be a neat trick.
|
5 I begin the hair. Since I had brown paint in the gun, I start with that, but I prefer to lay down the darker colors first.
| 6 I sprayed some white under the nose, to hide the errant paint, letting it dry while I continue adding the hair.
| 7 The reference picture I'm using isn't very sharp, and the hair appears very dark brown, almost black. I'm tempted to make the t-shirt the same, but I hold back. I can always darken it later if it doesn't look right.
| 8 I decide to leave it medium brown. Now I put in the lapels of his shirt and jacket.
|
9 I now add the eyebrows, and eyeballs.
| 10 Now I tint his glasses.
| 11 I'm always leery of doing the mouth. I don't want to make the lips too bright or prominent, that makes him look feminine.
| 12 A close-up of the "Lennonade" logo on the can.
|
13 A cute slogan and I'm getting close to calling it finished.
| 14 A little shadow, plus a horizon line and I'm just about done.
| 15 A close up of the final product. I'm not much good at doing portraits, but I'm pretty pleased with how it looks.
