1 The airbrush message board that I often visit is having a "brush-off". There are two categories, 'Amateur' and 'Pro'. Since I don't make my living airbrushing, I'll see how I do in the amateur comptetition. I get a piece of masonite for my "canvas". The two divisions are broken down to "Traditional Hot Rod Flames" and "Tru-Fire" the current, more realistic looking flames.
| 2 I'll start off giving it a white basecoat.
| 3 After I mask off the outlines, I shade some orange and yellow around the edges. Having no idea of what to do, I do know that I DON'T want to do something run-of-the-mill. I don't have a lot of experience doing portraits, so I decide to poke fun at myself and put my mug in the pic.
| 4 This oughta scare away the all the evil spirits.
|
5 With more of the details filled in, you can see the reference picture clipped to the easel on the left. I now want to throw in some other aspects of my personality, so I'll add an airbrush.
| 6 Here is my new Iwata HP-C, I've grown quite fond of this tool in a short time.
| 7 A close up. I don't want to get too detailed since I don't know what I'm going to add next. I'm making this up as I go along.
| 8 I usded to play bass, so I throw a double cutaway into the mix.
|
9 Now I want to create the feeling of chaos within the boundaries of the traditional flames, so I freehand in some flames and smoke to fill in the gaps. I even have flames leaking out of my shirt pocket!
| 10 Not wanting to dull the fury with the black from the smoke, I use purple to fill in some of the gaps.
| 11 Here it is all filled in. Notice the orange highlights on my face and on the bowl of the airbrush.
| 12 A close up to show the chrome refelctive look. I even put some flames squirting out the tip of the airbrush.
|
13 A wider shot of the flaming turmoil surrounding the lower portion of the work.
| 14 A wide shot of me and the work. My hair's a bit longer than the picture I chose to use as a guide.
| 15 Now to add some lettering. We've all heard the expression about somebody being a "Flaming Asshole" well since the forum is a family venue, I opt to use the term, "Flaming Idiot".
| 16 A close up of the lettering. I am quite happy with the way this turned out. I must've been the only one, my entry received ZERO votes from the rest of the voting public. The price of daring to be different!
