1964 Avanti (July 28, 2006)Preliminary images of Chuck Schauwecker's 1964 Studebaker Avanti. It is one of the 809 very rare 1964 Avantis manufactured before Studebaker shut down production in South Bend in December 1963. It is supercharged and since Studebaker didn't offer factory A/C with the supercharged cars, the first owner, who lived in Bakersfield, CA, had the delivering dealer install all the OEM components at the time it was delivered in 1964.
These shots were taken quickly at a show and are to be considered as a sample; I spoke with the owner and he seems quite willing to make arrangements to have me shoot the car, either in a studio or at an appropriate location, such as Palm Springs with its mid-ventury and Raymond Lowey connections. 2017 La Jolla Concours d'Elegance April 9, 2017, the 2017 edition of the La Jolla Concours dÉlegance.
Packard was the featured marque this year and the featured car was General Lyons'1934 Packard Runabout Speedster in a vibrant shade of blue. Try to imagine being wealthy enough to own such a car as the world was still feeling the effects of the Great Depression.
The Best of Show winner was the 1921 Duesenberg A Dual-Cowl Phaeton entered by Ron and Sandy Hansen, resplendent in yellow. The best prewar winner was Valerie and Aaron Weiss' 1936 Mercedes-Benz 290 Cabriolet A, fresh from its class win at Amelia Island. The top prize of the postwar cars and winner of the Ferrari class was the 1963 Ferrari 400 Superamerica entered by Donnie Crevier and Larry Alderson.
I had several personal favorites that stood out in the great field, two of note were the 1948 Packard 2270 limousine entered by Richard Walworth which featured ramp-up wheel chair access. My second favorite was the 1966 Peugeot 404 coupe owned by Greg and Margie Millard that took second place in the Pininfarina-bodied class, beating several Italian exotics.
Two Porsches caught my eye, the first being a highly original 1951 Porsche Pre-A coupe owned by Wayne and Nancy Baker. The other was not part of the concours iteself, rather it was a full-electric powered 1973 Porsche 911 Targa displayed by local San Diego firm Zelectric.
My favorite photo? A little girl playing with the sign in front of Skeets Dunn's 1951 Alfa Romeo 1900 coupe.
