In 2014, George R.R. Martin, the famous author of the Song of Ice and Flame saga, said in an interview that he tries to avoid modern word processors because of annoying autocorrect and spellcheckers. Software vendors, on the other hand, are always trying to help authors by adding a correction tool. But writers such as Martin will attest that these attempts only bring inconvenience to those with little to no writing skills.

This trend is changing, however, as artificial intelligence increasingly begins to understand the context and purpose of written text. One example is a new Microsoft Word feature called "Editor," a tool that uses AI to do simple proofreading.

"Editor" understands the different nuances of your prose much better than word-processing plug-ins. Among other things, it notes:

• grammatical and stylistic errors;
• the use of overly difficult words;
• excessive use of special terms.

It also offers smart solutions and gives them eloquent descriptions when something in the text seems wrong to it.

For example, Editor won't just mark a sentence in the passive voice, but will show its reformulated version in the actual voice.
