SCOOBY INSPIRED OUR LOVE OF RAT TERRIERS
For someone to become a breeder of a certain breed, there has to be something special that sparked the interest. For us, it was this little guy. On March 21, 2001, a gentleman from our community gave us our first Rat Terrier. He had purchased him a few months earlier and said that the little guy had too much energy for him and deserved a family that could keep up with him and love him. Scooby was nine months old at the time. Little did the man know what Scooby would eventually mean to us and where our love for him would lead us.
He was such a breath of fresh air and was always overjoyed to greet us each day when we got home. He and our Cocker Spaniel would play for hours in the yard and were a riot to watch.
Not being much of an indoor person, Kenny spends many hours on the outside. Every step he took, and no matter what he was doing, he could always count on this little guy to be his shadow. Kenny became VERY attached to Scooby and loved him immensely. He and Kenny loved to sleep together in the recliner.
Scooby was often observed throwing up pine cones and catching them all by himself just for entertainment. There were many times when he would go "hunting" and bring his trophy HUGE RATS and put them on our doorsteps or on the porch. We never had deer eat our garden when Scooby was alive. He'd chase 'em away in a second. He was an extremely smart and loyal companion.
He was a small standard-sized Rat Terrier weighing about 17 pounds. He was a black tri-color and sported a beautifully marked "blanket back".
Our beloved Scooby was born on July 10, 2000. He was diagnosed with diabetes on November 2, 2005. He passed away on January 10, 2006 living only 5-1/2 short years. His pancreas shut down and he was not able to absorb any nutrients from his food. Our vet said this was caused from the diabetes, which is genetic. Scooby is also our reason for FULLY testing our breeding dogs. We would never want to pass along a puppy to a family and have them love it as much as we loved him, only to lose it in a short while. We were not ready to let this boy go and we will always miss him.
