WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE

Don't miss anything!

My art career was primarily as a subtractive sculptor of wildlife, mostly birds. I worked in the field for over 20 years, teaching about 18 years. I was the resident artist of the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum in Maryland. I exhibited at the most prestigious exhibits of the carving arts nationally, and regularly judged at the National Decoy Carving Competition held annually in New York. I developed asthma, which made continued teaching impossible. I later was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and chose to retire from my carving and sculpting career. I have actively investigated many creative art forms, including painting with acrylics and watercolors, fabric art, cooking, writing, and making jewelry. I frequently do commissioned work for local galleries and individuals. My husband Tom is a retired US Air Force Colonel who flew fighter aircraft. He taught George W. Bush to fly jets during the President's service in the Texas Air National Guard and thus began a 35-year friendship with the President. Presently, Tom flies for a local flying service, mainly transporting doctors and medical personnel to the hospital facilities located on the nearby Indian Reservations. We live, with our Chow Chows, Tukee, Winona, and Lola, among the beautiful red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. I am also a pilot, but usually prefer to navigate when Tom and I go flying. We have also retired our Chow Chows from the show ring, but still enjoy traveling with them in our 38' motor coach. Lest you feel a twinge of pity for my physical ailments, let me tell you that my asthma has greatly improved since I have eliminated breathing the dust from the wood and stone, and that my Rheumatoid arthritis has been in remission for the past three years.

LIFE IS VERY VERY GOOD!!

I am still looking for my own "style" of painting after spending many years doing the highly detailed wood carvings. Here are some varied examples of my original flat work. I hope you can tell how much fun I have with my art.

LIFE IS VERY VERY GOOD!!

Unfortunately--or perhaps, fortunately--I have very few of my carvings. In the early days, I had no idea of how I would progress in this medium and did not catalogue my work.
I photographed only some of them, and only a select few were framed by professional photographers. All my carvings were signed with the name Jan S. Calvert.
