Kimonos
These Kimonos by Itchiku Kubota (1917 - 2003) are on display at the Timken Museum of Art at Balboa Park in San Diego. There is no photography allowed inside, so these are photos of the small prospectus but give a rough impression of these magnificent garments. They are much larger than life, it would take an eight to nine foot tall person to wear these.
"The landscapes of Itchiku Kubota" feature monumentally scaled kimonos that have rarely been seen outside of Japan. Kubota used a variety of traditional techniques and personal innovations to create his masterpieces.
Through a complex layering of dyes and inks, he produced shimmering, abstract landscapes on unique kimono. A single kimono could take up to one year to complete and was created for decorative purposes rather than to be worn." | Date(s): 11/6/08. Album by Heinz Steiner.
