The Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Master C
Regardless of who you are or what you like, the Richard Mille RM27-01 is nothing short of wildly cool. In this piece from early in 2015, Ben takes a closer look at this limited edition Richard Mille created for Spanish tennis star Rafael "Rafa" Nadal (seen here wearing it – while playing the U.S. Open). With the Wimbledon 2019 finals today, link this felt a fitting weekend to look back at a remarkable and impressively expensive watch. Here’s the big question: Would I actually wear this watch? The answer is absolutely a "yes," but with a few caveats. Its all-black cousin is a watch that I think I could wear on a daily basis – or at least almost daily basis. The white version is more of a "special occasion" watch to me. Summer in St. Tropez? Yes, please. Skiing in the Alps, with a few stiff drips aprés? Of course. I think it’s a watch that screams luxury instead of whispering it, so it needs a setting to match. And this watch is not a commercial thing. We did 20 pieces. I think, in a way, it was also to help seconde/seconde/ get known because we need people like that. We need people to kind of challenge us and look at what we do in a different way. Sometimes satirical, and sometimes criticizing so that we stay on our toes.JC: I think innovation has gone to a whole different level, from material to advancement to movement technology. Take, for instance, Eco-Drive going from a core watch with a power reserve of six months to a minimum of a year with E365. Super Titanium, with Duratect – now using different type of DLC finishes takes it to a totally different level. Even most recently in the mechanical side, there's been a very big interest in the resurgence in development of mechanical watchmaking.
As of a couple years ago I have been really getting into the 1980s "barrel" shaped Heuer chronographs. For me, it all started with a black Pasadena and from there it opened my eyes to all of these funky chronos that Heuer came out with. Many of the models I am gravitating towards have the Lemania 5100 inside with the sub-dial layout at 6-9-12, which I am attracted to.Of course, the longer I spend at the heart of the watch world, where collectors sometimes care about hairsprings and power reserves and lug-to-lug measurements even more than they care about what the timepiece in question actually looks like, the harder it is to remain on the periphery. Sometimes an outsider's perspective can be a valuable commodity in this funny little bubble (even if it link makes certain people VERY mad), but I know that by working here I'm moving from the outside in.The new "glassbox" Carreras have been one of the standout hits over the last year and a half. With a number of variations, from a blue dial to the "reverse Panda" that Danny wrote about all the way back in April to the newest Skipper release, TAG Heuer is making good use of the "glassbox" as a platform to fill out the product line with variations for everyone's tastes.
Now we're getting to the heart of what makes this watch so successful for me. Modernist architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe very famously said "Less is more," but he also said "I don't want to be interesting. I want to be good." This watch does away with the flourishes of modern watchmaking that are typically considered interesting and instead focuses on doing the core things really well. Until you turn it around, that is.Turning this watch over, you can see that the back of the watch is even more compelling, with an additional view of the tourbillon as well as the governor for the minute repeater, which uses friction and centripetal force to regulate the speed at which the link time is chimed. The nickname that Episode 4 references would definitely go well with a side of fries, too. For now, we've just got the burger graphic that's replaced the seconds hand. If the spinning central hamburger caused any confusion, the red and black rotating bezel makes Episode 4's bubbly soft drink reference crystal clear.Last week, Zenith's tactile Defy Extreme Diver landed in our digital storefront in black and blue colorways. Additionally, we announced our limited edition collaboration with Carl F. Bucherer – the Heritage Worldtimer Limited Edition for Hodinkee.
