An articulated brooch is a brooch that is hinged so that part of the brooch moves.  NOTE: the placement stick pin on the bottom of the brooch.  This is used to place the pin where you want it.

Note the prongs that look like long pointy teeth.  The long pointed prongs were used to pierce through fur or very heavy material and then would clip in place.  Hence the name fur clip.

These were generally used to hold something in place by Georgian and Victorian women. Most often a length of pretty lace at the neckline of a dress or perhaps lace worn over the hair. They are always tiny in size. This one is typical in shape and set with flat cut garnets.

This hat pin was made so one end screws off. You would stick the pin in a hat and then screw the end piece back on, so you wouldn't loose your pin.

This is a traditional Scottish marriage brooch given to the bride by the groom on their wedding day, and subsequently pinned to the shawl of the first baby to protect it from "evil spirits".

This brooch was decorated using the Niello method.  Which is a black metallic substance, consisting of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, with which an incised design or ground is filled to produce an ornamental effect on metal.

Transfers were used on porcelain and mother of pearl for these brooches.  You can tell the difference between transfer ware and hand painted, because the picture on transfer wear is made up of small dots of color.

Trembler 1 ~ Flipping Treasures
Trembler brooches have a part on them that is mounted on a spring so that when you walk that part trembles.  Note: the spring construction, which is what makes this a trembler.
