Silvertone 1446 w/original case
The 1446 Silvertone is a great guitar. It was designed and built to compete with the best of other USA made hollow body electric guitars of the same period. It has special designed, Gibson made mini-humbucker pickups and the original Bigsby tremolo unit. The light weight, straight medium/chunky neck, great frets, and low action make this a very comfortable and responsive guitar to play. The trussrod functions perfectly.
This guitar with the elegant black and white color scheme and very unique, angular pickup bezels has become a favorite of many including Elvis Costello, Bryce Dessner of the National, Annie Clark of St. Vincent and, of course, Chris Isaak. When it was first issued in the 1960s Hubert Sumlin of Howlin’ Wolf’s band played one too. It has a multi-bound body, large f-holes, and block MOTS inlays that really add a lot of class to the look. There are belt buckle scratches and a few other paint chips/nicks/scratches and one dent in the binding at the 7th fret. There are many small imperfections but overall it’s really not shabby. The dent in the edge of the neck/binding doesn’t affect playability at all. The hardware is all original. The Silvertone logo on the headstock is all there too. The very tip of the trussrod cover is broken off. The plastic pickguard, so often missing on these is in good shape with no warping or cracking. The mid- 1960s Gibson made pickups sound strong and shimmery. This guitar sounds great! Think of it as a cross between a Gibson and Gretsch - with a strong midrange presence. The sound of the 1446L is perfect for playing blues, surf rock, country, indie rock. It sounds awesome for playing slide guitar! The Silvertone 1446 appears to be fully hollow, and it has great character and resonance, but there is a sound-block under the bridge area that helps control excessive feedback. The original chip case, though a little misshapen, is included. | Album by Daniel Wollock. Photos by Daniel Wollock. 1 - 4 of 4 Total. 2486 Visits. |
