NEWPORT TO ENSENADA YACHT RACE
On Friday, April 25, 2008, an hour or so before the first phase of the race, sailboats of various sizes and designs move to the starting area.
These photos were taken from Corona Del Mar, just south of the channel into Newport Harbor. Just beyond the rock wall on the north side of the channel is the beach off the famous surfing area, "The Wedge."
Although a day of almost perfect weather there is indeed, for those with sharp eyes and inquiring minds, a layer of smog over the far horizon.
The starting area becomes crowded with more and more boats as the noon start time nears.
I was told that Dennis Connor was in the race with his "Stars and Stripes," see photos 22 through 25.
In addition to the race entrants, a number boats and an odd vessel or two carry those who just came to see the festivities.
