The third annual 1/1 (1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division) Golf tournament took place 2 November 2009 at the Newport Beach Country Club, Newport Beach, California.
The citizens of Newport Beach once again proved their generosity and willingness to support 1/1, their Adopted Battalion. On a beautiful day, beginning with bright sunshine at start of the 0900 registration, players gathered for the opening ceremony.
After the tournament, players, 1/1 Marines, and guests enjoyed a reception on the club patio, followed by dinner in the dining room and an enthusiastic auction of several premium level prizes.
Distinguished guests and 1/1 Tournament players included MajGen Jed Pearson USMC(ret), Col Chris Bourne former CO 1/1, LtCol Craig Wonson, Commanding Officer of the battalion, LtCol Doug Steele 1st Marine Regiment, LtCol Rob Schwartz HQ 1st MarDiv, Maj Douglas Downey, 1/1 Executive Officer, 1st Marine Regiment Sergeant Major Brian Zickefoose,and 1/1 Sergeant Major, Troy Dabney. As well as Marines of 1/1 and HQ 1st MarDiv, guests included Marines from I Marine Expeditionary Force, also headquartered at Camp Pendleton. USMC combat vehicles and weapons on display courtesy 1/1. 1st Marine Division is the largest, oldest, and most decorated division in the United States Marine Corps.
The 2009 Tournament Chair was once again Mr. Dan Marcheano, Newport Beach resident and owner of the Arches restaurants, assisted by select members of the Newport Beach 1/1 Adoption Committee and other volunteers.
1/1 returned in late July 2009 from their most recent deployment with 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, 1/1's fifth deployment since its Adoption by the community of Newport Beach in December 2003.
100% of the proceeds from the 1/1 Golf Tournament will be used to support the Marines, sailors, and families of 1/1, both when the Battalion is deployed and when it's at Camp Pendleton.
