Saturday, 21 August 2010, Marines from 1/1 (1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division), gathered at Westcliff & Dover in Newport Beach to conduct a car wash. Money received from the enthusiastic support of many people from the local community will be used to help defray the cost to the lower ranks of enlisted Marines and Sailors to attend the 1/1 Marine Corps Birthday Ball in October. Due to a pending deployment and intense training, 1/1 will be unable to celebrate on 10 November.
The day was a huge success financially, thanks to the support of local citizens, and turned out to be a fun day as well, with the Nicholson Pipes and Drums playing in support , and trays of food and beverages provided by Dan Marchaeno, owner of The Arches, adjacent to the parking lot.
Thanks to a generous community who came to have their cars washed, Marines of the battalion will attend the 235th Birthday Ball of their Corps. Faithful volunteers and long time supporters planned the event and made sure that adequate prior notice was published to assure a huge turnout.
Marchaeno and Sergeant Major Jon Henry planned the activities, and the volunteer Marines were joined by senior NCO’s and Officers of the Battalion to visit with and thank locals who came by to support 1/1 and enjoy the festivities, including the Sergeant Major and Battalion Executive Officer, Major Mike Nakoneicz. As well as raising needed funds, 1/1 Car Washes afford an excellent opportunity for the residents of Newport Beach to meet their Adopted Marines face to face.
