Rest Day in Camp
Woven Chess Board
Green Mask Panel
Gumbo Time
Breakfast at Sheiks Canyon Camp
Our decision to spend a rest day was a good one, as the afternoon temperature soared above 90 degrees. I spent a lot of time in the shade reading a book. Mike organized a project of creating a chess board from reeds and sticks and ending up playing a game using Necco wafers, hard candies, pepperoni, and rocks as game pieces!
The Green Mask Panel, as always, was spectacular with many different styles of pictographs to see. Getting water was more difficult than our last time as the downstream pools from the Green Mask spring had dried up. This required about a 500' hike to the spring to fill our jugs. With each jug weing about 40 pounds, a water run was a real chore.
Note photo takers are given in the titles under the thumbnails:
Kickass Trekkers on this trip were: Bill Mooseker, Shelby Stong, Fred Stong, Will Stong, Mike Stong, and Allan Hoseth
The descriptions under the photo thumbnails in the album sometimes contain links to maps or additional information. These are identified by "Blue” text for links. I've also inserted links to Google Maps to show where certain photos in the album were taken or to locate features shown in the photos. Click on the link, close the sidebar, and choose satellite view. Basically, you can then zoom in and out using the mouse wheel or drag the map by clicking and holding.
For panoramic photos, I would recommend clicking on the thumbnail photo to enlarge. View at original size for most detail. The thumbnails do not do justice to petroglyphs and pictographs, so I would recommend enlarging them as well. Please take the time to view the many videos to better experience what it was like to be there.

Because of the heat, we were doing a rest day in camp. Mike, Will, and Allan embarked on a project of building a chess "board" from natural materials - branches, reeds, etc. Mike is assembling the skeleton here, which is supported on four tent pegs (Enlarge photo)

Mike, Shelby, & Fred at the Green Mask Panel atop the rubble of rock that has fallen from the wall above. You can see the very ancient pictographs high above their heads above the break in the rock. How the ancients were able to paint so high up is a mystery. Mike is videoing the more modern Anasazi pictographs on the wall formed after the rock fall.
