Granite, Montana -Ghost Town - August 2005
Pictures from 2005 and 1968 visits to Granite, one of Montana's many ghost towns. Granite is a short distance (over a very rough mountain road) from Phillipsburg, MT. Phillipsburg is a historic town off the beaten path and is well worth a visit.

The descriptions under the photo thumbnails in the album sometimes contain links to maps or additional information. These are identified by "Blue” text for links.
In this photo album, I've used links to Google Maps to show where certain photos in the album were taken or to locate features shown in the photos. Click on the link and close the sidebar. Basically, you can then zoom in and out using the mouse wheel or drag the map by clicking and holding.
I've prepared a Google Map of this hike that can be found here

Robber's Roost Canyon - Utah

Heading Down into Dirty Devil Canyon
|
This was the eleventh trip to the Utah canyons for the Troop 24 Kickass Trekkers. Located just outside of Hanksville, Ut, Robber's Roost Canyon is a tributary canyon of the Dirty Devil River. It was a little different than most of our trips as it entailed descending more than 700 feet from the rim of the Dirty Devil Canyon, crossing the Dirty Devil River, and hiking up a scenic side canyon steeped in western history.
There were some adventures along the way. Just getting my old low clearance Corolla to the trailhead was one, and getting stuck in the Dirty Devil's quicksand and ruining my camera and GPS was another. Not to mention a natural arch and some challenging slot canyons.
Photo titles ending in "j" are by Joel; in "s" by Shelby, and in "b" are by Bill using Shelby's camera.

Parker at Slate Pass
|
This was a weekend warrior trip with Parker and Andrew. We had planned on going to Twisp Pass but I had forgotten the amount of BS the National Park Service puts you through to get an overnight permit. After getting our permit for the Horse Camp at Dagger Lake, we continued our drive over the North Cascades Highway. The further we drove the madder I got, so I proposed we do Buckskin Ridge instead even though I've been recently (2007 & 2008).
Instead of the Silver Bullet ('85 Camry) I was driving the Corolla, which isn't quite a mountain car. The road to Hart's Pass gets worse each year and it definitely isn't for the faint of Heart. Parker, who had never been on such a road, was really uncomfortable going up with the sheer drop on his side of the car.
