enlarge 58KB, 800x533 1 gg06-001r The San Rafael Reef from Utah Highway 24 between Green River and Hanksville. This is a very isolated and desolate area. Sue and I traveled on this road on our way to California in 1965. We had a flat tire along this stretch and we had to buy a tire in Hanksville. Even with inflation, it is still one of the most expensive tires we ever bought.
enlarge 61KB, 800x533 2 gg06-002r Another view of the swell - there are a lot of hidden canyons here, but there are no long loop trips.
enlarge 62KB, 800x533 3 gg06-003r Along Highway 24 - this is pretty typical.
enlarge 71KB, 800x533 4 gg06-004r Along Highway 95 south of Hanksville, is a scenic turnout for views of Lake Powell.
enlarge 77KB, 800x533 5 gg06-005r View from scenic turnout.
enlarge 77KB, 533x800 6 gg06-006r Lake Powell - because of a mutli-year drought, the water level is way down. Just beyond the turnout, the road swings around an arm of the lake. In 2000, there were a lot of campers there useing the many boat launches. In 2006, this arm is completely dried up and the campgrounds abandoned.

enlarge 114KB, 800x600 11 gg06-013b After a long drive, we arrive at the Collins Spring Canyon Trailhead - As you can see, the long shadows indicate that sunset is not far away - Allison, Eric, Roger, and Danny.
enlarge 102KB, 800x600 12 gg06-014b Looking down Collins Canyon from the trailhead parking lot. Yes, this is my Corolla (at the left). It made it down the road without bottoming out too many times, although I had everybody get out a few times at the rougher spots.

enlarge 133KB, 800x600 14 gg06-016b AFter a short hike down Collins Canyon, we hit the main Gulch at dusk and set up camp on this rocky outcrop.

enlarge 118KB, 800x600 16 gg06-019b A view of the Narrows from our camp - we were taken aback by the water filling the gap as in 2000 there was only a small puddle that was easily jumped over.
