Pasayten 2001
Group Photo at Lower Fox Lake
Pasayten Wilderness - Washington
July 2001

Day 1: Billy Goat Corral to Two Bit Creek
Day 2: Two Bit Cr to Fox Lakes
Day 3: Fox Lakes to Ashnola Shelter
Day 4: Ashnola Shelter to Sheep Lake
Day 5: Sheep Lake via Ramon Lakes to Wolf Creek
Day 6: Wolf Creek to Drake Creek
Day 7: Drake Creek via Billy Goat pass to trailhead

The Pasayten is a great destination for a backpacking trip. This trip took us through some areas we had been to in years past, but also let us explore new areas. Although it was fairly in the season, there was no snow on the trails and we were able to do the cross country scrambling without difficulty.

Unfortunately, this trip would be much, much more difficult, if not impossible, today because of several forest fires (namely 2003 and 2017) that swept through the area.

Adults on this trip:
Bill Mooseker, Greg Phillips

Scouts on this trip:
Adam Phillips, Danny Stallings, Shelby Stong,Austin Peckinpaugh, Roger Shively, Joel Fuller

The descriptions under the photo thumbnails in the album sometimes contain links to maps or additional information. These are identified by "Blue” text for links. I've also inserted links to Google Maps to show where certain photos in the album were taken or to locate features shown in the photos. Click on the link, close the sidebar, and choose satellite view. Basically, you can then zoom in and out using the mouse wheel or drag the map by clicking and holding.

Note: June 2023 - I have added maps (JPG files suitable for printing) for each day of the hike from the CalTopo maps described below. I have also added a table for miles traveled along with the elevation gains and losses between the points shown on the map. Links to Caltopo maps for that days hike are given in the description under the map thumbnail. Maps best viewed at "Original" size. CalTopo also gives the option of viewing the map using several different base layers (I have used Forest Service 2016 for this album). You can try the other layers as well. An intriguing layer for this hike is the "Fire History" one, which shows how the Pasayten has been effected by fires in the 20 or so years.

An explanation of how I have derived the distances and elevation gain/losses can be found HERE.

Note: May 2023 - I have replaced the original low resolution images with high resolution ones. I have also added videos from the trip to the album.

Lower Fox Lake in the morning

Note most of the forested area above was destroyed by  forest fires in 2003 and 2017. Only a few trees remain around the lake. Satellite image of this area showing the effects of the 2003 fire is found HERE. While the upper basin escaped the ravages of the 2003 fire, it did not escape the 2017 fire.  Now there is almost total devastation of this beautiful basin as shown HERE.

Joel leads the goup as the trail nears the end of Larch creek Valley,  Beyond this point  the trail turns to the east to cross Diamond Creek.  This narrow rocky portion of the trail is no place to meet a horse party.
