Grinnell Outdoor Orientation Program
We canoed a loop of rivers, swamps and lakes in upper Wisconsin for 5 days.  There were a total of 25 freshmen and 10 older student leaders in the program, but during the actual canoing we were split into 5 groups of 3 canoes each that started at different places and times so that we only occasionally passed other groups.  Of the 4 other freshmen in my group, one guy was from St. Louis, one guy was from small-town Iowa, one guy was from Chicago, and the only other girl was from Boulder, CO.

Heading out!  I was usually in the back of the canoe because I'm a better "steering wheel" than "engine".

One morning we joked that we were headed to the end of the world, because the fog was so thick that we couldn't see each other at times (the 2 dots are the other 2 canoes).

We got excited when the sun "started to come out."

There was one day that the weather was Beautiful, and that happened to be the day that we were paddling across very clear and beautiful lakes.  We stopped that day for a swim (our only shower of the trip).

We walked through a lot of swamps and deep mud, as evidenced by John's water shoes that were a very bright blue at the beginning of the trip.

On the 4th day, we got to the campsite that we were supposed to stop at at 9:45 in the morning, so we decided to finish the trip in 4 days instead of 5.  Therefore, on the 5th and final day, we slept in late, ate a huge brunch, and played in the water until about 1:00, when we headed back to the base camp.

The guys had a contest to see who could flip the other one's canoe first.  Obviously they both succeeded.

They are now paddling back to shore.  The guy who looks like he is just in the water is actually sitting in a canoe full of water.

On the last day on our way back to camp, the 2 leaders decided it would be cool if they were paddled into camp, which left one guy to paddle a canoe with three people in it.  As you can see, he was up for the challenge.
