Say hello to Pepper Jack!
He is a 16-lb.5-year old fellow.
Pepper Jack's situation got turned upside down when his mama had to move and couldn't have her dogs indoors. She he and his 3 canine siblings lived in an ourdoor pen. For 6 months. That was not a happy time for him.
...because more than anything he is a social, gregarious, people-oriented fellow who wants to engage with his people.
He greets all newcomers with friendlinbess and loves to sit on laps, lounge with you on the couch, and get belly rubs.
His favorite thing in the world.
In his first few days here, Pepper Jack had to wear a belly band because he did a good deal of marking. Not a surprising thing for a male dog coming into a new environment where there other male dogs, especially as he was having to remember what being an indoor dog required
And after those first few days, his house training has been good and he graduated to being "naked" in the house. He comes running in excitement whenever he hears you say "Let's go outside!"
His house manners have also been very good. He does occasionally try to door dash into the garage when he thinks you're leaving, and then bark in agitation when you first go out, but that stops very quickly after you've closed the door. We have only left him alone uncrated for short perioeds (up to 2 hours) so far, but as he has proven himself reliable we've been increasing that.
Pepper Jack really loves toys of all kinds. He will tug with us but not with the other dogs, undoubtedly partly because he can be a it possessive of his toys when they are around.
Squeakie toys are the best! Plushies don't last very long around him, though, as he is an expert destuffer.
He lovs to chase a ball but isn't keen on giving it back to you. Click for a funny short video.
He LOVES to run around the yard and will do so several times a day. He is fast and agile and has the grandest time "dive-bombing" the humans as he races by. He also has a strong prey drive. For these reasons, he requires a securely fenced yard or a specific plan for enabling him to routinely get exercise in another securely fenced area -- NOT off leash, even on a large acreage property, and NOT contained solely by electric fence.
He is an enthusiastic leash walker but does tend to pull, so needs continued work on loose leash walking.
When he first got here, he met the other dogs with a good deal of interest. For the most part they've gotten along very well. Occasionally there may be a bit of a tiff over food or other valuable resourse, but as they have gotten to know each other better, that has been diminishing.
Overall, he'd be okay with other easy-going dogs, or he would also be fine as an only dog, provided he had plenty of human interaction and opportunities for mental stimulation and physical exercise.
Thank goodness foster dad has two hands!
Nap time
Love his coloring!
