GingerSnap is just as sweet as can be.
See the "Ginger Snap" cookie on her back? She is 18 months old, stands almost 14" tall, and now weighs about 17 lbs. (She came to us a chubby 21 lbs.)
GingerSnap came to us in mid January. She had been suffering from severe skin/itching problems since the age of 3 months, and her elderly owner's vet was unable to successfully resolve the situation. Allergy testing and treatments were recommended, but the woman did not have the time or financial resources to pursue that, so Ginger's condition got worse over time and she was finally surrendered to rescue.
Picture from January: Her feet, legs, tummy, chest, neck and chin were horribly infected.
Picture from January: The fur was gone and the skin was seriously inflamed, raw and scaly. Even the pads of her feet were pink and sensitive to the touch. She walked slowly, often standing with a foot lifted as though it hurt to touch the ground.
Picture from January: Her chest and neck had a bad rash and looked like turkey skin. Instead of treating the underlying cause, the previous vet had put her on anxiety drugs and recommended that the owner keep her muzzled to stop her from biting herself. Ginger had spent the previous 2 months continuously muzzled and doped up.
Fortunately, she came to us! She was started on antibiotics, corticosteroids (for inflammation), and antihistimine (for itching). She was put on a high quality anti-allergy diet with Omega 3 and 6 supplements and got medicated shampoos and sulfurated lime dips.
This picture was taken 1/28/07, just 10 days after the previous pictures. Her hair was already starting to grow back a bit, and the skin is soft and light pink instead of scaly, bumpy, and red.
GingerSnap led a very sheltered life up to this point, in a 1-person household without other dogs, cats, kids, or much activity. She is proving to be an an awesome dog. She is very gentle, walks fairly well on leash, and is housetrained.
She gets along great with other dogs, although she didn't grow up with any so she is still learning to communicate properly with them, and other dogs sometimes find her "pushy." She is fine with cats, although she may very well bark at them when she gets her confidence up.
Download MOV 11 Click on the picture to see a short video of her playing "soccer." She loves her ball!
Photo 3/10/07: Her fur on her feet, legs and tummy have grown back very nicely. She really is one cute cookie!
Yes, thank goodness for the Beale family. You all did so well with the two of us and for this we are truly thankful. I (Spencer) didn't look too much better than Ginger Snap when you rescued me. - Spencer & Kiefer, Fri, 26 Jan 2007 2:32PM
