This is Amaro.
Enlarge photo 22
We think she is a rattie-hound mix.
Enlarge photo 33
Amaro is 2 years old and weighs 21 lb.
Enlarge photo 44
She is very friendly and very people oriented. She wants a lot of attention.
Enlarge photo 55
She LOVES to play and wrestle with other dogs. They wrestle so energetically that it's hard to get a photo until they stop for a break.
Enlarge photo 66
Despite her frequent demands for attention and her high play level with the other dogs, she does settle down nicely, and overall she is just a medium energy dog.
Enlarge photo 77
Amaro came to us as practically a blank slate. She wasn't house trained or crate trained, had poor leash walking skills, and knew no obedience commands. She didn't even seem to have a clue what "No!" or "Uh-UN!" meant.
Enlarge photo 88
But she is catching on quite quickly.
Enlarge photo 99
She has learned to sit on command, and is getting the hang of coming when called.
Enlarge photo 1010
Her house training is coming along wonderfully, with a set schedule. Access to a doggie door has helped, too. We do still crate her when we're going to be gone for more than an hour.
Enlarge photo 1111
She doesn't like to be in a crate and will paw at the door and whine to be let out. But she has learned to run voluntarily into her crate for her meals, and she sleeps in her crate quietly at night, so she is slowly getting accustomed to it.
Enlarge photo 1212
For the most part she is fairly quiet, unless she wants to entice another dog to play with her.
Enlarge photo 1313
When she first got here, she didn't seem to understand about toys. She would occasionally carry one around, but only played with them while someone was interacting with her. But boy has she learned to love toys now!
Enlarge photo 1414
Amaro's biggest challenge has been keeping 4 paws on the floor. She continually wants to be up with her paws on your thigh, the desk, the table, the counters... She is making slow but steady progress on learning "off."
Enlarge photo 1515
But it's hard for a doggie who is so hungry for your attention and affection!
Enlarge photo 1616
"I can dance if you want to..."
Enlarge photo 1717
She is very comfortable being outside, and we assume that her lack of house manners is because she had been kept as an ignored outside dog before coming to rescue.
Enlarge photo 1818
Because she is very treat motivated, she does enjoy participating in training sessions and learning what you have to teach her.

Holly came home from college for Christmas. Amaro was glad to meet her... despite her apprehension about the camera. (She gets worried about having her picture taken.)

Introducing herself to Holly.

Kissy face

And hugs!

Amaro meets the neighbor girl.
Enlarge photo 2424
She does not appreciate the baby gate keeping her from the presents under the Christmas tree.
Enlarge photo 2525
"Why can't I come in? I am sure some of those presents are for me!"
Enlarge photo 2626
Sure enough! A big stuffed toy for Amaro for Christmas.
Enlarge photo 2727
Will dance for toys!
Enlarge photo 2828
She does a lovely play bow when she wants someone to play with her.
Enlarge photo 2929
"Now if I could just get to those Christmas stockings!"

Waiting for dinner...
Enlarge photo 3131
She has learned to sit and lie down on command, but often has a hard time staying there.
