Local Canucks fans will have an extra reason to tune in to tonight’s game in Phoenix — as Hope’s Jeff Hoggan will be playing for Wayne Gretzky’s gang. The 31 year old right winger was signed with the Coyotes as a free agent last summer, but has been toiling on the farm club in San Antonio Texas this season. “His team was on the east coast on a 25-game road trip when he got the call last week,” said his mom Ann on Monday. “He had all winter clothes with him — and he won’t be needing those in Phoenix. “He played his hundredth NHL game on Wednesday in Detroit. That was a 5-4 loss, then they lost 7-2 to the Hurricanes at home on Saturday. They’re not doing too well — but Jeff got some power play time on Saturday and Wayne Gretzky said he had a good game, so I guess he’s staying for a while. They’ve got a lot of injuries right now.” Hoggan, who previously played on the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins, is fortunate to get another chance in this highly-competitive league and he’s already making a mark for himself. Saturday, he assisted Steven Goertzen on the Coyotes’ first goal — and posted a fighting major, when he tangled with Brandon Sutter. That’s one goal short of a Gordie Howe hat-trick. The 6’1”, 188-pounder also led Phoenix in the hitting category, with 7 of their 37 take-outs on the night. Hoggan’s ice time was 9:37 on Wednesday and 11:06 on Saturday — respectable minutes for a forward. | Date(s): Various. Album by Barry Stewart. Photos by Barry Stewart. 0 Total. 0 Visits. |
