No ref, so both teams negotiated the use of one of their players, who had been red-carded in a clash with City last week.

He turned out to be a pretty good ref and the game was played with "no malice" as another ref often says.

We were looking to be short-handed, so Andrew called his brother Allan to come and help. We ended up with a few extras — but were down to no subs after injuries.

Alan had blue jeans and no cleats. I gave him my extra cleats (missing two studs on the right foot), shin pads and shorts and he turned out to be an effective — and colourful — player. 'Looks like about 6'6", so he had an advantage on heading.

We had the wind and sun in the first half — but it ended up perhaps being a disadvantage, as Kyle's punts were rolling off the end line. KenRoc scored a contested goal, which a few guys thought was off-side. They followed up with a nice passing play for a 2-0 fairly early in the first half. We settled down and ended the half 2-0. They were very dangerous with their little touches on the ball, springing other guys free.

Things continued to be tough in the second half, with Kyle making some great saves. Then we got a break. Andrew crossed it in front and Zane had a few jabs at it before putting it in.

Next, Zane or Andrew put a shot off the post and and somebody cleaned up the rebound. 2-2.

KenRoc answered with a 3-2 goal on a twisting, wind-assisted redirect that just made it across the line.

Late in the game, the ref fairly awarded us a free kick from about 20 yards out. Zane left-footed it over the wall and into the top right corner. A real beauty!

KenRoc laid on the pressure but we resisted and kept the tie.

Phew!
