There are so many stories out there about Judas' betrayal of Jesus, and the most common one is that he went to hell and became Satan's right-hand man. It's a great story, but it doesn't really jibe with what we know about the Bible.

Let's start with a review of the Bible and then dive into the details of Judas.

The Bible states that Judas "went and hanged himself." This is a very clear and concise statement. No one ever says "he went to hell and then hung himself." That's not how the Bible works. We can't read into the text to mean something other than what it says.

There are a couple of things we can learn from this. First, suicide was illegal at the time, which means that if Judas actually committed suicide, he would have been prosecuted for murder. Second, even if Judas died of natural causes, this is a pretty bad thing to die from. He would have most likely gone straight to hell. Judas didn't end up in hell. The Bible doesn't say that Judas went to hell. It says that he went and hanged himself.

Now let's look at a few other passages to see if there is any evidence to support the idea that Judas ended up in hell.

In Luke 22:47, Judas "turned and said, 'Rabbi, he who is going ahead, he who is staying behind, he who tarries, he who travels with us'" shows that Judas believed he was going to hell. This isn't the same as "went and hanged himself", so he didn't commit suicide.

In Acts 1:18, the Bible states that Judas "hanged himself." This is the clearest statement we have, and it is still not "went and hanged himself." So, again, Judas didn't commit suicide.
