P2P_2009 (September 06, 2009)Pier To Peak
Now a true half marathon with a 0.2 mile added increment to make this the one of the USA's most challenging legitimate half marathon road races.
Race director jake Clinton asked me to take at a location that really "charactrerizes" the event.
Dennis located himself at mile 12 on the "steeps" with the Los Padres Wilderness in the background. Kevin Young recommended such a site.
Eric Forte easily won the event in about 1 hour 35 minutes for 13.1 miles and 4000 ft altitude gain. |

Lima is a town of 11 million on the Pacific Oceano but the good running towns like Huaraz are above 10,000 ft. Runners are rare as the main interest in Peru is surfival for food asn shelter. |

P2P_2007 (September 2, 2007)| Santa Barbara Pier is at sea level and the 13 mile finish line is at the highest point of La Cumbre Peak. A very warm 7:00 AM start says people will be warm on Gibraltar Road and along Camino Cielo to the end. Another well arranged race by Jake Clinton. I wish I could run along with camera to document the course. Not. A survey showed about half the runners are new on the course that some claim is the country's hardest 1/2 marathon. It sure is hard to get below 1:29:59. |

Now we simply call it the 4th July ~ 9.3 mile run thru Goleta Ca . Complicated course with many turns. Last year the leaders went off course. This year a tad warm (80F) sunny and no wind. Three leaders the entire run. |

LaPlaya_5000 (Feb 11 2007)| Jose Gonzales has created a truly fast 5 KM run down State Street to the Pacific Ocean. Really a neat run because of covering the downhill city streets and along State Street with a goal of holding the momentum gained downhill to the fast beach bike path run. Has to be challenging for getting support at street corners as everyone wants to run it rather than manage traffic. Runners passed first mile in 4:35 - that is fairly fast ! |

2006July4 (2006 July 4)Annual Semana Nautica 15,000 m footrace thru GOLETA, CA. Starts in a hidden neighborhood and completes near track of SM High School. Nice sunny summer day. Leaders lost 2-3 minutes by missing a left turn. Slower runners could not understand why they were being passed by faster runners at 2 miles. This is the nature of road racing !

Cool and no sun made overcast great for running. Jose Gonzales gathered many volunteers to block car cross traffic. Most fun seemed to be with the 8 to 10 min/mile runners. There were no roses at the Mission but other flowers were along State Street. bad day for pix. Very overcast with ASA400 had to shoot at 1/150 sec for blury pix....sorry. 2nd LARGEST SB race with 560 participants. e-mail comments ? |

2005McConnells5000 (August 21, 2005)| Kevin Young provides the always FAST 5 Km/GP 10 Km & kids mile & biathalon with sponsorship from McConnells Ice Cream. Where else in the USA (?) can you have an awesome race & Ice Cream social and much food for $10. in 2005 - only Goleta CA. It was overcast and Hawaii humid, and it was a fast 5 KM. (No pictures for the other races.) Dj ran the 10 KM ! |

2005_Orchard2Ocean (2003)| Cross Country course along the new Carpiteria Bluff trails. Some very undulating , turning, dipping traces with a few mud puddles to navigate. An awesomely beautiful place compared to other local unenvironmental sites. Wildlife abundant. Only hazard is the RR crossings. 10 Km & 5 Km. |
