Altering A SPAM Can

Altering any can is pretty much the same, and I'm sure you already know how to do that.  But, I thought it would be FUN to show you step by step how I took this SPAM can and transformed it into a very cute pen n' pencil holder for my son's teacher.  I had a fun time creating it!!! Let me know what you think.... please visit my blog to post a comment about this tutorial (or for the others I have posted  here). Stuffs I'll Be Using
When I took this picture - I really didn't know what I was going to create with my can.  But I had a general idea.  You will see that I won't use some of the products pictured here - just don't be surprised, ok?!

Spam Can n' Crop O' Dile
So, the first thing I did was punch holes thru my can using my Crop O' Dile.  I used the 1/8" punch.  The COD went thru the can so easily - then again, SPAM cans are pretty thin.

Wrap With Grosgrain Ribbon
I wrapped the rim with Regal Rose Grosgrain ribbon.  This will cover the sharp edge that thh inner lid had when the cover was opened.

Strip 1
I then cut a 12 x 12 strip, this will be my top layer of my can.  A 12 x 12 strip is more than enough to go around my can once.

Apply Sticky Tape
My double stick tape is used to adhere the paper to the can.  I used 6 strips.  This allows me to take 1/2 of the strips off, wrap around can, and then the other 1/2 - so that I don't have a large strip of paper with stickiness to work with.

Can with top layer...
Then I adhere the 1st strip to the top part of my can.

2nd Strip
I cut another strip of paper - but this time, a little wider than the 1st strip.

Apply Sticky Tape
Applied the same way I did to the 1st strip.

2nd Strip on Can
Then I stuck the 2nd strip on, lining up to the bottom of the can, and because it's a little wider, it gives a nice design look to it.

Grosgrain Ribbon
Now, I cut a strip of Regal Rose grasgrain ribbon, enough to go around my can, and apply sticky tape to the entire one side of the ribbon.

Adhere Ribbon
Now I remove the backing of the tape, and adhere the ribbon.  As you can see - I am always starting my beginning where I the paper cut offs.  The ribbon will go right where the 2 strips of paper meets.

Some Die Cuts
I wanted to add some die cuts to my can, to make it a little more cuter.  SO, I'm using this die cut fr Sizzix of a clipboard and pencil.  This is the 1st time I'm using this die cut.

Cover The Cardboard...
I also want to make my die cut a little thicker - therefore, I'm taking the cardboard from my bulk purchase of Spam, and using that.  The cardboard isn't really THAT thick - but it's thick enough.

How it looks..
I apply adhesive to the back of my design paper - and apply directly on the design part of the cardboard (to cover the SPAM design, of course!).

See - I covered the design!

Cuttine The Die
I'm going to cut the die, and you'd want to face the die cut upwards, so that you can see exactly where you should place your piece that you want to cut - you'll also want the design side to face towards your cuts.

Whalla
The die cut is perfect!

The Pencil
Now to cut the pencil....

Pencil and Clipboard Clips
And now the pencil again, and clips of the clipboard.  As you can see - I'm using the amount of CS needed, rather than cuting the entire die cut.  It won't ruin your cuts - but it'll make a cut into your cutting mats.

Yellow Pencils n' Clips
Here's my pencil (I didn't take a pic of the red one...sorry), and clip for my clipboard.  (Any palm readers out there?!)...

Apply Clip
To my clipboard... it's coming along ain't it so cute?!

Then a ribbon
This cute ribbon will only make my clipboard cuter.

The Pencil
I really only needed the eraser part to be red on my pencil - but to make things easier, instead of cutting out the eraser tip, and adhering a tiny lil' piece, I cut the tip off of the yellow CS, and applied the entire yellow right on top of the red.  This made it easier on my eyes and my nails!

Color In The Tip
Then I colored in the pencil tip with my black sharpie.  (Cute the eraser tip, huh? - and you can't even tell!!!).

Color the shavings part
Yep - had to add a lil' color to the shaved part of the pencil, or it wouldn't look realistic, right?!

Clipboard n' Pencil
They are both now ready for adhering to my can.

Pencil
I used Glue Dots to stick them to my can.  Glue dots are pretty strong...  I love them!!!  Sometimes stronger than mono-adhesive (in my opinion).

Finished Can
My can is finally complete and looks great with this clipboard n' pencil.  But this gift is going to Chazz' teacher, so we can give it to her without any pens, can we?!?!

Decorate Some Pens
So, I took these 2 pens, and am going to decorate with the coordinating DS paper.

Remove ink barrel
Now, measure the ds paper to the ink barrel, I cut a little less then the length of the barrel.

Enlarge photo 31
31
Apply Adhesive
I applied adhesive to the entire DS paper.

Enlarge photo 32

DS paper around pen
I then rolled the barrel into the ds paper, and just really applied pressure to make it a tinier roll.

Finished Product
Here are the end results - my altered can, with 2 matching pens.
