Earthquake Lab
Students pulled a sandpaper-covered sled over a sandpaper strip to simulate the strike-slip motion of earthquakes. Sugar cube buildings were placed on top of the sled to simulate the effect of earthquakes on buildings. A rubber band was connected to the sled to determine the potential energy force needed to begin the "earthquake" series. Data was collected on each "run" and averages were taken. The goal of the lab was for students to be able to investigate the relative force needed to produce earthquakes.
