Accelerometer Lab
We used motion sensors similar to the ones used to detect earthquakes in California. These sensors are provided by the California Quake Catcher Live Network. Students first experimented with the bounces of different balls on a table top. Then they used the USB-connected accelerometer to see a graphical representation (on x, y, and z scales) of the table top vibrations created by the same five balls. Finally, they were given three challenges in which they tried to figure out how to replicate a printed graphical representation of the sensor movement in x, y, and z planes with a special movement of the sensor above or on the table top.
