Welcome to D & R’s Rat Terriers.
My husband and I have always had a love for animals, and we both have had dogs, cats, fish, and birds our whole lives. I first fell in love with the Rat Terrier breed when I was introduced to one in 2001. This dog is affectionate, gentle, uncomplicated, intelligent, sensitive, and fearless.
Once you've owned a Rat Terrier you will feel like you've been missing out on something your entire life.
I have found them to be sweet, easy-going, and super smart. Rat Terriers are hard workers and loyal lifetime companions. They are always willing to do whatever you do and go wherever you go.
If you want a dog who...

The Rat Terrier is a tremendously versatile little dog. He makes a marvelous companion, excellent hunting dog and all around good friend for both young and old. He has often been described as a "person in fur" and "the dog that everybody wants but few people know about." Their popularity is increasing.
And once you have one……you've got to have another! With lots of praise Rat Terriers can be trained to do anything; they love to please!
Rat Terriers enjoy human companionship immensely and will enthusiastically share any activity with their owners. The most solid attribute of the Rat Terrier is an undying willingness to please their master and a need to be near him or her. They have a loyalty that makes them a wonderful family companion.
The Rat Terrier is a playful, happy-go-lucky, devoted companion that is also protective, and yet can be aloof with strangers. They are an efficient, intuitive hunter as well as an energetic and intelligent companion, at home in the city or country.
As a house pet they are unsurpassed, being extremely intelligent, loyal, friendly and happy to be alive.
They have a long life span of 14-18 years, so they will be around to enjoy. They have fewer health problems than other small breeds.
Rat Terriers are very low maintenance. Their coats are short and smooth requiring little grooming if any at all. The expressiveness in the eyes of a Rat Terrier is a joy to behold and the attentiveness to their master is like none other. They are natural born entertainers and will be your child's best friend. Their intelligence is far superior to most breeds. They have extremely keen senses, making them excellent watch dogs.
He is truly a "dog for all seasons," suiting the need for household guardian, intelligent companion, and children's playmate and loyal friend.

D & R's Jules Winnfield (Born 6-23-06)Jules is from a mating of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. He has his dad's terrific rattie personality and his mom's mini size. He is a terrific little guy, and he will stay here with us. At only 8 lbs. he is a toy size.

Bruce Willis .
.
Bruce Willis (nicknamed Willie - make it?) is one of Honey's and Jules' babies, born on July 1, 2007.
Bruce was a fighter, and even though he lost 1/3 of his birth weight, he refused to "Die Hard".
We bottle fed him every three hours for 4 1/2 weeks. After struggling with him for so many days and nights, we just couldn't let him go. So he remains with us, and we are all happy about that!

She has been a loving and loyal and a wonderful mother to her puppies.

Rhett Butler was our first Rat Terrier. He is a black and white Tri, with long legs,perfect tan markings and an outgoing personality everyone loves.
He sired many litters, and has now gone into retirement. He enjoys a life of leisure now, and has joined the Cornelius Family where he is loved and doted on by three of the cutest little boys.
We love him dearly and he will always have a special place in our hearts. |

Rat Terriers are one of the most intelligent breeds. Some are too smart for their own good. They are loyal to a fault and in many instances give their lives to protect those that they have given their loyalty too. They are easily trained for conformation, obedience and as working, herding and hunting dogs.
Rat Terriers make wonderful pets for the elderly. They are just as content to lay at your feet, in your lap or next to you all day every day as long as you do give them a period of time outside to run off their energy. They make superb children’s pets. They can play endlessly and they have a natural instinct to protect young children. They make great companions for any age with their comical expressions, their thousand facial expressions, their willingness to learn and their keen spirit to please those around them.
Rat Terriers are not yappy dogs but can be vocal if they sense there is trouble or when a stranger is around. They however are very social and once they find that their owners approve of the stranger they will be the first to shake their hand for a pet on the head.
Rat Terriers are very curious creatures and can get in predicaments that they sometime need help getting out of. They've been known to climb trees, climb ladders, vault fences and end up in some of the most unusual places. They are very eager and find themselves sometimes stuck in a hole that wasn't quite large enough for them, but going in is so much easier than coming out!
Rat Terriers were thought once to be a "Hunting" type dog but has gained popularity over the last 10 years as being one of the top on the list for companion and working dogs. Rat Terriers are now being shown, kept as companions, used as herding dogs, narcotic dogs and in the field of search and rescue and of course they can still track a deer, run a fox and rabbit into the ground and tree a squirrel.
A Rat Terrier can fit into any social class and come out on top and be the life of the party. A Rat Terrier owner is a proud owner and usually has more stories to tell about their beloved pet than anyone without one wants to sit and listen to. Two Rat Terrier owners can entertain each other for days with their dog’s antics.
Rat Terriers are one of the healthiest breed of canines with few health issues to date. The smaller the dog the more health issues you can expect to have with them. Their hair is short and the best way to deal with their shedding is to get them accustomed to a daily brushing. You can also get them accustomed to VACUMNING - Yes I did say Vacuuming - at an early age. One vacuum a day takes about 15 seconds and it will keep your house virtually hair shed free. |

Pet Rules .

Dear Dogs and Cats,
The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food, does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I
entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years canine or feline
attendance is not required.
The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!
To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:
To All Non-Pet-Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:
1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.
(That's why they call it "fur" niture).
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.
Remember: Dogs and cats are much better than kids because they:
1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3 Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and...
11. If they get pregnant, you can rehome their children.
