Bichir Species (December 16, 2003)There are two genuses of this type of fish: erpetoichthys, and polypterus. The former one has only single species which is Erpetocihthys calabaricus. The later one has more than 14 to 17 species (few species are under debate) which are:

Spots are forming a black line between the lips and suboperculum. Fins yellow with brown or black spots. This carnivorous fish lives in streams, lakes and zones of flood. Reproduction and spawning occurs during the rainy season. Normally, its pretty active. |

Dorsal side gray colored, ventral side paler, yellowish, with 6 to 9 darker transversal bars. Fins with weak spots. It lives in streams, lakes and zones of flood. |
