There are two genuses of this type of fish: erpetoichthys, and polypterus. The former one has only single species which is Erpetocihthys calabaricus. The later one has more than 14 to 17 species (few species are under debate) which are:

The color is olive, but white on the ventral side, with three darker longitudinal bands on the lateral side, which are more visible in young than adults; pectoral and pelvic fins have greenish and yellowish transversal bands.

Yellowish or greenish colored on the dorsal side, ventral side more clear; darker longitudinal bands on lateral side.  Dark spots and blotches are sometimes present on caudal, ventral and pelvic fins and underside of the belly.

Additional Comments:
Dorsal side gray-olive colored, with 7 to 8 black transversal bars; ventral side yellowish, lighter on ventral side of head. Spots are forming a black line between the lips and suboperculum. Fins yellow with brown or black spots. This carnivorous fish lives in streams, lakes and zones of flood. Reproduction and spawning occurs during the rainy season. Normally, it’s pretty active.

Additional Comments:
Congicus is hyper active. Remember it can grow over 30”, so 18” is still a young one. It’s funny to see a 18” big congicus swims up and down in the tank. Dorsal side gray colored, ventral side paler, yellowish, with 6 to 9 darker transversal bars. Fins with weak spots. It lives in streams, lakes and zones of flood.

Additional Comments:
Endlicheri is the most popular species of bichirs, especially in Japan. There some Japanese are captive breeding endlicheri and sell to the market. It has vertical bands characteristically irregular which make it looks like the tiger strip. Normally, endlicheri is calm, and spends most time on the tank bottom.
