Welcome to the Atencio Kennel website! We are located in a small town in beautiful Northern Utah. I began showing and breeding Rat Terriers in 2005, and began focusing on the Decker Bloodline variety in 2007. Although I am still relatively new to this breed, I have known and loved dogs my entire life, and am a second-generation dog breeder. I inherited my love of purebred dogs from my father, a hunter and houndsman, who has been raising top quality hunting Plott Hounds and English Coonhounds for over 45 years. In late 2009 I changed my kennel name from “Blazing Sun Kennel” to “Atencio Kennel” in honor of my family name. Our dogs are shown in UKC conformation, and also used for hunting, one of the tasks that this breed was originally bred to do. I am extremely proud of the fact that my dogs can go from the field to the show ring, and vice versa, proving beyond any shadow of a doubt that this magnificent breed truly CAN do it ALL! My ultimate goal is to consistently produce dogs that are the total package and all-around fine examples of the breed. I am striving for a perfect balance of health, beauty, correct structure, good temperament, and hunting ability. Not all dogs will make the cut -- Our dogs must prove that they have some merit in order to be considered for breeding purposes.
Producing healthy and genetically sound dogs is one of the most important parts of my breeding program. Contrary to myth and popular belief, there ARE health issues that affect this breed. For that reason, we choose to do health screening on all dogs that are considered for breeding. Our dogs are checked for congenital cardiac defects, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and Legg Calve Perthes disease (LCP); all of which is done at the appropriate ages for testing. We have also recently started screening our dogs for Primary Lens Luxation (PLL), a genetic eye disease that can lead to glaucoma and blindness. Because I care about the integrity of my kennel, and of this wonderful breed, I will not breed a dog before health testing has been completed. Doing my best to keep my lines clean and free from genetic defects is a top priority, as it should be for any ethical breeder.
We have litters only on occasion, and once in a while I will have puppies available for Pets, Hunting, Show, or Performance. Every puppy will come with a health record, registration papers, health guarantee and lifetime placement guarantee. Our puppies come with their first and second set of vaccinations, are parasite-free, and micro-chipped. All of our sires and dams are DNA profiled through UKC prior to breeding, therefore all puppies from our kennel can be DNA parentage verified, if the new owner so chooses. We do this for the protection of our buyers, and also to protect the integrity of our breeding program and our pedigrees
Puppies sold as pets/companions only are sold on spay/neuter contracts OR will be spayed/neutered by my vet before going to their new homes, no exceptions!
