enlarge 184KB, 600x800 1 IMG 2839 Andrew and I took a Red-eye flight from Seattle to Baltimore. After getting our rental car we drove up to Baltimore and walked around the harbor. We ended up in the very impressive National Aquarium This picture is taken from the Australia exhibit looking through the glass wall out to the harbor.
enlarge 170KB, 800x600 2 IMG 2840 For a structural engineer, this window wall is very interesting - a pre-tensioned cable stayed wall.
enlarge 129KB, 800x600 3 IMG 2841 Andrew along harbor behind the Aquarium.
enlarge 140KB, 800x600 4 IMG 2842 For a major city, Baltimore seemed to be fairly quiet - not the bustle of downtown Seattle. Also note that along the skyline, there are no tower cranes for new construction.
enlarge 152KB, 800x600 5 IMG 2843 Looking back towards the Aquarium - a building that was designed around the exhibit path up and around using many escalators and ramps to get you to the different exhibits. The glass triangle at the top housed a rain forest with all sorts of exotic birds.
enlarge 99KB, 800x600 6 IMG 2844 After getting our car from the parking garage (the most expensive parking I've ever paid for) we headed out to Fort McHenry. These cannon are post Civil War era and not from the War of 1812.
enlarge 112KB, 800x600 7 IMG 2845 Another view from the parapets along Fort McHenry.
enlarge 124KB, 800x600 8 IMG 2846 Andrew and typical gun port. The guns bore an engraved "Fort Pitt Pa" on the ends of their barrels.
enlarge 115KB, 800x600 9 IMG 2847 Andrew - view to the south of the harbor. It was from this bay that the British Fleet did their bombardment of the fort. In the distance you can see the "Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge.
enlarge 100KB, 600x800 10 IMG 2848 View of the flagpole inside the Fort. Depending on the wind, the fort will fly different flag from large to small. We later saw the actual flag from the "Rockets Red Glare" at the Museum of American History in Washington.
enlarge 137KB, 800x600 11 IMG 2849 We stayed with Chuck and Sheila Ellis. Sheila is a friend of ours from high school in Tyrone.

enlarge 287KB, 800x600 15 km 154 1 Mark, Andrew, Greg, and Sean waiting for Henry Mooseker's Interment Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
enlarge 245KB, 800x600 16 km 159 1 The ceremony- the chaplain is reading a verse from the Bible: "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
enlarge 283KB, 800x600 17 km 149 1 In the distance was an Honor Guard who gave Dad a three gun salute at the close of the ceremony.

enlarge 150KB, 800x600 23 IMG 2855 After the ceremony, we toured the cemetery - this photo was from the Kennedy grave site.
enlarge 154KB, 600x800 24 IMG 2856 Evan at the Memorial Amphitheater at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
enlarge 142KB, 600x800 25 IMG 2857 As we were walking around the Amphitheater to get to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Evan said that he wanted to go down and sit in "that chair". We all thought that he meant one of the many bench seats, but no he had his eye on the marble throne on the stage. Greg said, "Oh, THAT seat".

enlarge 156KB, 800x600 48 IMG 2879 Goodbye to Sean and Manon - they were taking a train to the Baltimore Airport and returning to San Diego.
enlarge 149KB, 800x600 49 IMG 2880 After leaving the Museum of Air and Space, we walked down the mall towards the Capitol building.

enlarge 202KB, 800x600 52 IMG 2883 Parker and Karen.
enlarge 171KB, 600x800 53 IMG 2884 There was no access on this side of the Capitol, so we opted to go back down the Mall to the National Archives.
enlarge 210KB, 800x600 54 IMG 2885 After leaving the National Archives, we walked through part of the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden where this Spider is found.
enlarge 155KB, 600x800 55 IMG 2886 Got this picture of Evan with another "Moose" in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
enlarge 202KB, 800x600 56 IMG 2887 View of the Dinosaur exhibit in the Museum of Natural History.
enlarge 191KB, 800x600 57 IMG 2888 Evan, Parker, and Andrew. - After dinner at "Harry's" we walked over to the White House opposite Lafayette Square.
enlarge 206KB, 600x800 58 IMG 2889 Evan and Parker at the White House. We then walked to the McPherson Square Metro Station and returned to our hotel.
enlarge 160KB, 800x600 59 IMG 2890 On Friday (Oct 8) we decided to to the Monuments on the Mall. We took the Metro to the Smithsonian station and then walked down to the Washington Monument. Because of the long lines, we decided not to enter the monument but to continue on to the World War II memorial. This photo shows the WWII Memorial and the Lincoln Monument from near the Washington Monument.
enlarge 124KB, 600x800 60 IMG 2891 Looking back at the Washington Monument from the WWII Memorial.
enlarge 187KB, 800x600 61 IMG 2892 Fountains and Pool at the WWII Memorial.
enlarge 173KB, 600x800 62 IMG 2893 Pool and Fountain - on the opposite side of the pool is the Freedom Wall with 4048 stars each representing 100 American Soldiers who lost their lives in the wall.
enlarge 208KB, 800x600 63 IMG 2894 Another view - My own personal impression of the monument was that it was certainly a beautiful space but that there was little emotional connection to the momentous events of World War II that affected so many million of people.
enlarge 148KB, 800x600 64 IMG 2895 Looking back to the Washington Monument.
enlarge 274KB, 800x600 65 IMG 2897 Down the Mall from the WWII Memorial is the Vietnam Memorial, a very emotional experience.
enlarge 307KB, 800x600 66 IMG 2896 Charles Caffarelli was a friend of mine from high school (Class of 1960) who was MIA in Vietnam. Sent a silent prayer his way.

enlarge 316KB, 800x600 76 IMG 2908 Opposite the Vietnam Memorial on the opposite side of the Reflecting Pool is the Korean War Memorial. This was a very moving memorial and you can see the pain and anguish in the statues representing the veterans of the "Forgotten War"
enlarge 259KB, 800x600 77 IMG 2909 Pool of Remembrance at the Korean War Memorial - very beautiful.
enlarge 268KB, 800x600 78 IMG 2910 Another view of the statues representing the war veterans.
enlarge 188KB, 800x600 79 IMG 2911 Hiking back to the Washington Monument, I got this shot of the White House.
enlarge 141KB, 600x800 80 IMG 2912 We went into the Museum of American History where I got this shot of Parker at the Podium in the American Presidents exhibit. This is a great museum, which crams more into limited space than any other I've visited. Parker who wanted to visit the rest room said he was going to the "History of Plumbing Exhibit". Greg told me it was an "interactive" exhibit.
enlarge 156KB, 600x800 81 IMG 2913 Although it was after 4, Andrew and I decided to hike down to the Museum of the American Indian". We were both impressed with the architecture of the building, which is evocative of a southwest canyon.
