Slickhorn Canyon - Cedar Mesa, Utah
Day 2

Day 2: March 24: Dayhike up Slickhorn from Camp 1 to Access #1. Visit Kiva Ruin and other ruins above 2nd Access.

Head down canyon past Access #4 to Camp 2 at mouth of Trail Canyon (Access #6).

Roger - This area of the canyon is quite scenic - as you can see from the cottonwoods, spring has not quite gotten this far up the canyon yet.

Near the head of Access #1 is an alcove with a well preserved Kiva - This large shard is on a rock on the trail up to the alcove (see cairn at top of photo).

Bill & Allison at Kiva- Alcove is located on western wall of canyon.  This view is looking south.  Before we left, we met another hiker who had come down from canyon rim using a break in the cliff band seen at the extreme left of this photo (see green area).

This entrance to the living quarters is well preserved - the structure to the left has collapsed.  The logs indicate some kind of roof or floor level, but the height doesn't seem to be enough for that.  Why have a roof here?

Close up of Pictograph - Can you interpret it?  Note four legged animal at top right - is it a coyote, cougar, etc.  Is it associated with squiggley line? What is the "ball" at the end of the line.  Zoom into handprints to see distinctive circular patterns that were painted on the hands before making the print.  Below the hand prints are two vague figures - Turkeys?

Roger - The face of the rock here is much rougher in surface texture than most other pictograph panels I have seen.  This could be the reason that the figures have faded somewhat.

By the time I got down to the canyon floor from the Kiva Alcove, the others had already taken off. I came around a bend to see Shelby high up on a ledge (see white dot - zoom photo).

In the alcove at a lower ledge was this wall - a granary perhaps.

Just above was another wall renmant - the floor was covered with dung (Bighorn sheep I think) that was halfway between a horse turd and a cow pie.  It looks like they use the alcove to get out of the weather.

Further up the alcove was this two level ruin - you can see the branches supporting the roof exposed as the mud has washed away.

Close up of petroglyph - another squiggly line (although irregular) with circle on end.  This reminds me of a map of a canyon made by a meandering river.  Note faint animal figures top right.

Another set of petroglyphs - note anthromorphic figure (with "Santa" hat) that has been cut in two as the rock split and fell away - we could find no evidence of the lower half of the figure on the rocks below.

One of the guide books mentions this ruin at the mouth of access #2 - we had looked for it in vain the previous evening.  We had mistakenly assumed that it was high up, when in fact is was at the base of the cliff.

While waiting for Roger, Shelby took this photo of the cliff face on the canyon wall opposite us using his telephoto lens.  If you zoom the photo you can see that the wall has a panel of petroglyphs that we missed - dog gonnit!
