1891-38 Mosin Nagant (7.62x54r)
Commonly known as the 91-38 these rifles are a bit of an enigma. They're made from cut down M1891 rifles & usually have original Imperial Russian markings on the barrel/chamber area. They were modified to approximate to the M1938 carbine. It's believed they were mfg in Czechoslovakia due to the T marking usually being found on them, it's not believed they were used by the Czech military but may have been another example of weapons mfg there for supply to "sister" Communist countries. They did show up in DDR useage & were known to have been used by the DDR Border Guards. The rifle shown here is an earlier import in vg condition based on an Imperial era Tula rifle.

Mosin-Nagant 91-38 right view
This rifle is built off an Imperial era M1891 Tula rifle, it's matching, or rematched due to it's rebuild, the buttplate & mag floor markings are stamped the bolt is etch matched to the barrel number.

Buttplate marking
The number stamped on the plate matches the barrel serial number but the part is a post Imperial era Soviet piece.

Buttstock right side
The stock on this example is actually an M44 type w/cutout for bayonet on right side, it has the later, post 1943 type pressed in sling escutcheons & this one has the orange color typical of Polish made 44's. These rifles can be found with w/M44, M38 & cut down M91 stocks.

Action pic, right side
All the 91-38's I've seen have hex receivers although I've heard of a few made on later round receivers. This example has the Tula hex receiver & original cut down M91 barrel fitted w/an M38 sight. The bolt on this example is etch matched to the barrel & uses an early style cocking piece.

Receiverr marking
The original Imperial marking is still present on the receiver, also note the T (or possibly hammer) in a circle.

Markings
A view of the markings found on the chamber & barrel, original Imperial era Tula w/the Imperial eagle. These rifles can be found w/the Imperial markings or w/o although they are usually present.

Mag plate marking
Onthis example the mag floor has the barrels serial number stamped on.

Cocking piece marking
This rifle uses an early type cocking piece, the marking above appears to be a hammer in a circle but most Imperial & early Soviet Tula markings use the hammer alone, hammer or T?

Buttstock left side
These rifles used the standard style of Mosin sling w/leather straps thru the escutcheons.
