Vet care and medicine guide
UPDATED FOR THE VENIE 2010 "LOST" LITTER.
The pups have been wormed with Nemex-2 wormer in a preventative effort against stomach parasites. They were also wormed with Ivermetrin wormer, preventatively for stomach parasites and heartworms. I will send every pup home with a Health Report, with all of the details.
The pups are scheduled to get their first booster shot at 1 day shy of 8 weeks old. They will need to get 2 additional booster shots (at 12 weeks and 16 weeks) before they are "totally safe" from catching any diseases from unvaccinated dogs or stools.
I STRONGLY suggest the following:
1. That you take puppy to your vet within 48 hours after you bring them home. The vet can check your puppy (be introduced, most likely for the first time, to the breed) to make sure that they think it's healthy. This will also be a good way to meet your vet for the first time (for those of you who haven't had any animals and needed vet services before). Bring along the vaccination paperwork that I've given you and discuss their vaccination schedule. ** It may be helpful, for your busy vet, to bring some AHT breed information with you. A good vet will likely have questions and this will help educate them about the breed. A good thing to mention to your vet is that these guys should be treated/medicated like "sighthound breeds". Let them know that the AHT is genetically a RAT Terrier (they've likely heard of them and may even have RATs as clients).
2. That you provide the 2 follow-up boosters to keep your puppy safe from contagious diseases. I also suggest that you have your vet provide the 1 year annual booster shot, when it is due (the pup will be about 1 yr 4 months old).
There is some controversy, at this point, on what the vaccination schedule should be. Vets say that the dog should get annual boosters every year. Studies that have been performed and recently released are showing that they are not necessary - and in some cases - are causing mild allergic reactions to even death.
AHTs are more susceptable to allergies and allergic reactions. Due to this fact and the recent findings, I have decided to vaccinate my dogs every 3 years (after providing the dog with the puppy shots and the 1 year booster). This "every 3 year" vaccination schedule is what the study recommended. Most AHT breeders are also doing this.
3. Provide the necessary rabies shots. Please do NOT schedule to have your puppy receive more than 1 shot/day from the vet. Providing more than 1 shot a day increases the chance for an allergic/negative reaction to the shots.
4. Continue using a monthly HEART WORM medication. My vet recommends using it year-around (which I do). I recommend using either Interceptor or HeartGuard brands.
5. Continue to take your dog to the vet for yearly check-ups - even if your dog is not due for any shots. It is good preventative medicine - your vet may pick up on something that you have not noticed in your dogs health.
6. Some common over-the-counter medications can be used on your puppy/dog.
BENEDRAL is always handy for any itching, insect bites and allergic reactions (good for vaccination shot reactions, too!) that may suddenly appear. Dose at: 2 mg. per pound of dogs weight. Safe to repeat dose every 8 hours.
PEPTO BISMOL can be used to help soothe stomach, relieve vomiting and ease diarrhea. Dose at: 1 tsp. per 5 lbs weight. Can repeat every 6 hrs.
BUFFERED ASPIRIN (NOT TYLENOL!) for pain and anti-inflammatory. Dose at 5 mg per pound every 12 hours.
MINERAL OIL for constipation. Can use up to 4 tablespoons a day.
Of course, these are my opinions and I am not a medical professional. Each case may have different circumstances. Always ask and take your vets advice into consideration.
